Synopsis

The Earl of Rochester is as notorious as his 17th Century namesake, enjoying the pleasures of London society and the trappings of his riches. When visiting the fascinating, but married, Circe Langstone he accidentally meets her stepdaughter, Ophelia. Clearly frightened in her surroundings he begins to wonder what could have upset her so, until a chance encounter a few days later, reveals all. What she tells him starts a train of events that nearly kills her and leads the Earl to hide her away on his country estate. Furious at losing her stepdaughter, Circe, whom the Earl has nicknamed 'The Serpent of Satan' calls on the forces of black magic to get her back. How the Earl thwarts the evil stepmother, how he saves Ophelia from a fate worse than death and how he finds true happiness are all told in this thrilling tale by Barbara Cartland.

"A brilliant study of the mundane, full of unexpected detours and driving prose. Hjorth's novel ingeniously orbits the intimate stories that are possible only when a character has put words on paper and sent them through the post." —New York Times Book Review, "The Best Post Office Novel You Will Read Before the Election"

From the author of the 2019 National Book Award Longlisted Will and Testament

Ellinor, a thirty-five-year-old media consultant, has not been feeling herself; she's not been feeling much at all lately. Far beyond jaded, she picks through an old diary and fails to recognize the woman in its pages, seemingly as far away from the world around her as she's ever been. But when her coworker vanishes overnight, an unusual new task is dropped on her desk. Off she goes to meet the Norwegian Postal Workers Union, setting the ball rolling on a strange and transformative six months.

This is an existential scream of a novel about loneliness (and the postal service!), written in Vigdis Hjorth's trademark spare, rhythmic and cutting style.

    Rio

Bryn Wallace had been the one bright spot in my life before my grandparents brought me to live with them. After finding my mother's dead body, my grandparents had picked me up and I started a new life in The Shores, Alabama. It had always bothered me that I never got a chance to tell Bryn goodbye.

Now, seven years later, my memories of the beautiful girl who I considered my first love were destroyed by the disappointment she had become.

    Bryn

When life took another nosedive from bad to worse, which happened too often, I would tell myself that one day I'd find Rio March. When my sister had, once again, gotten us forced out of town, I took the money I had saved from working over-time and I made the decision on where we would move. However, fate was never on my side. Within two weeks of arriving in The Shores, Rio hated me and made sure everyone else in town did too. I couldn't even take my nephew into the candy store.

It didn't seem to matter where we moved, this would always be our outcome. Hated, looked down upon, and judged for sins I hadn't committed. But I was done moving. The trashy Wallace girls were in town to stay.

    Contains mature themes.
