Synopsis

A Knight In Paris

It’s 1802 in post-Revolution Paris, the heads may have stopped rolling, but the guillotine still casts a long and terrifying shadow over surviving members of the Aristocracy. Not least the beautiful young Comtesse Lynetta de Marigny, hiding, terrified, in the bowels of the Château de Marigny, from its hateful new ‘owner’, who is bent on sending her, like her parents, to Madame Guillotine. When the dashingly decadent Darril, Earl of Charncliffe, arrives at the Château to buy fine French furniture and objets d’art for his English country seat at the request of his new fiancée the ‘Incomparable Elaine Dale, he is instantly smitten by this delicate, terrified and helpless beauty. It seems his beloved Elaine is not so ‘incomparable’ after all.The Earl is Lynetta’s Knight in Shining Armour as he smuggles her away, rolled up Cleopatra-like in a rug. Pursued by murderous revolutionaries, they make their escape posing as honeymooning newlyweds under the nose of Napoleon Bonaparte himself. But secretly love struck Lynetta yearns for their swooning charade to be real and forever.

A Circus For Love

In a thrillingly romantic twist on the age-old “boy runs away to join the circus” tale, beautiful young heiress Thelma overhears her wicked stepmother plotting to get her hands on Thelma’s fortune by forcing her to marry her stepmother’s lover. Horrified, Thelma flees on her beloved horse Dragonfly. Soon she stumbles across a magnificent house that looks like the Fairy Palace of her dreams. More amazing still, when she enters its grounds, she’s thrilled to find a circus, complete with lions, tigers, cheetahs, monkeys and a Big Top! Equally enthralled by its tall, handsome owner, the Earl of Merstone, she accepts his invitation to stay and soon Thelma and Dragonfly themselves become stars of the show. But the runaway’s dream turns to a nightmare when Thelma discovers that the Earl has an evil, scheming relative of his own – and soon the Earl will meet his murder with a starved tiger at his throat unless a trembling Thelma can save him!

Paul's second letter to the Corinthians explores the meaning of the cross in terms of personal suffering--his own, and that of all the Messiah's people. If in Galatians he is angry, if in Philippians he is joyful, in this letter his deep sorrow and the raw wounds of his own recent suffering are very apparent. Yet he is determined to view all of his suffering and all of the troubles of the world through the lens of the gospel. These studies by Tom Wright on this powerful epistle point us toward the strange comfort to be found in the suffering, death and resurrection-life of Jesus, the Lord of the world.

Peter Kreeft, esteemed philosophy professor and author of over eighty books, has taught college philosophy for sixty years. Throughout those decades, he yearned for a beginner's philosophy text that was clear, accessible, enjoyable, and exciting (perhaps even funny). Finding none that met those criteria, he eventually decided to write it himself. In this four-volume series, Kreeft delivers, with his characteristic wit and clarity, an introduction to philosophy via the hundred greatest philosophers of all time. Socrates’ Children examines the big ideas of four major eras―ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary―and immerses the reader in the “great conversation,” the ongoing dialogue among the great thinkers of history, including the most influential philosopher of all: Socrates, the father of Western philosophy.  Volume IV: Contemporary Philosophers surveys the great philosophers of the last two hundred years and observes the splintering of philosophy into a wide array of philosophical enterprises. Some, unhinged from the past, rebel against the very endeavor of philosophy, but others, seeking to revitalize ancient conversations, return to and renew the deepest questions of meaning, happiness, and the human person.

In the face of a world crisis, which is manifestly deeper than one can imagine, many are inclined to ask: “Has Christianity failed?” Fulton Sheen’s Thinking Life Through seeks to answer this critical question. The conclusions the author proposes are far-reaching and touch upon subjects as diverse as the truth and meaning of human sexuality, the purpose of life, discordant marriages, angels, alcoholism, the vocation of the soldier, materialism, parenting, and even the question of spanking children.
On the critical subject of freedom, Sheen writes, “The true definition of freedom is the right to do whatever one ought, and oughtness implies law, goals, purposes, and perfection. Freedom is a moral power and not a physical one. It revolves around what man is rather than what man does. We are more free within the law than outside of it.”
Thinking Life Through also addresses the world’s political climate, something that in many ways mirrors the present political discourse. Focusing on the tragic decline of post-Christian society, Sheen gives special attention to both the threat of communism and the dangers of socialism. Sheen also gives clarity to the role of the individual and the family while living in a time of moral and political uncertainty. Finally, Sheen addresses good manners and politeness as he states in his quintessential style, “Another effect of materialism is to be seen in the decline of courtesy. There is politeness and decorum and a desire to please others when it is generally recognized that every person bears within himself an image of the Divine.” For anyone seeking to grow in wisdom, Thinking Life Through will be your guide.
