Synopsis

"I had this feeling that space was not empty but here we're - its building blocks" - Space time magazine

What are the Ingredients of space? Is space physical? Is space Empty? -This book presents the building blocks of space.

This thought experimental book is a good introduction to the ingredients of space and has a lot of interesting history about the development of the theory since 1879. It's an informal introduction to a very difficult and doubtfully intelligible theory doubted even by its most ingenious contributors. The reader should expect that he/she will have to concentrate hard on what Balungi says but the rewards are significant. He is a talented physicist and a good writer. If you read it carefully and stop to think about the message as it unfolds then you will get a worthwhile if imperfect picture of what the theory is saying and how it was invented,It's buried treasure and you will have to do some digging. It is a really serious attempt to do all that can be done in an informal style. Balungi explains and re-defines Einstein's theory of general relativity, Dark matter, black holes, Dark energy, elementary particles, the accelerated expansion of the universe, and the building blocks of space-time. This wonderful and exciting book is optimal for physics graduate students and researchers. Not since James Maxwell's celebrated best-seller a dynamical theory of the electromagnetic theory and Albert Einstein:Relativity: The Special and The General Theory A Popular Exposition has physics been so vividly, intelligently and entertainingly revealed. This is a First Edition to Atoms of Space.

Features a new "where are they now" section, with updates about lives of expedition's original climbers and updated resources based on the "Anti-Racism in the Outdoors" (ARITO) guide.

Outdoor journalist James Edward Mills's book, The Adventure Gap, is a groundbreaking volume that is equal parts adventure story, history, and inspiration as it chronicles the first American all-Black summit attempt on Denali in 2013. Mills uses this momentous expedition as a jumping-off point to explore diversity in the outdoors, from Mathew Henson who stood at the North Pole in 1909 to contemporary adventurers such as polar explorer Barbara Hillary and rock climber Kai Lightner.

This tenth anniversary edition once again shares the compelling events that unfolded during Expedition Denali's summit bid. But it also provides fresh context: A new thought-provoking afterword by Mills examines what has evolved in and around the outdoor community since that effort. He highlights progress and inspiring stories, such as Full Circle Everest, an expedition led by Phillip Henderson that put an all-Black team on top of the world's highest peak. And he points to places where we can and should all strive for higher achievement. The Adventure Gap has become an essential text in outdoor education and inspiration—a story of our times, now more relevant than ever.

In March 2011, people in a coastal Japanese city stood atop a seawall watching the approach of the tsunami that would kill them. They believed—naively—that the huge concrete barrier would save them. Instead they perished, betrayed by the very thing built to protect them. Erratic weather, blistering drought, rising seas, and ecosystem collapse now affect every inch of the globe. Increasingly, we no longer look to stop climate change, choosing instead to adapt to it.

Never have so many undertaken such a widespread, hurried attempt to remake the world. Predictably, our hubris has led to unintended—and sometimes disastrous—consequences. Academics call it maladaptation; in simple terms, it's about solutions that backfire. Over the Seawall tells us the stories behind these unintended consequences and the fixes that can do more harm than good. From seawalls in coastal Japan, to the reengineered waters in the Ganges River Delta, to the artificial ribbon of water supporting both farms and urban centers in parched Arizona, Stephen Robert Miller traces the histories of engineering marvels that were once deemed too smart and too big to fail. In each he takes us into the land and culture, seeking out locals and experts to better understand how complicated, grandiose schemes led instead to failure, and to find answers to the technologic holes we've dug ourselves into.

Genetics - The Blueprint of Life...

Genetics is the branch of biology that focuses on the study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics. It seeks to understand how traits are passed down from parents to offspring and how these traits are expressed in living organisms. At the core of genetics lies the concept of genes, which are segments of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) that contain the instructions for the development and functioning of organisms. These instructions guide the creation of proteins, which carry out the majority of biological functions necessary for life.

Each organism's genetic material is contained within its cells, and it is organized into structures called chromosomes. In humans, for example, there are 23 pairs of chromosomes, with one set inherited from each parent. Within these chromosomes are thousands of genes, each responsible for specific traits. These traits can range from eye color and blood type to more complex characteristics like susceptibility to certain diseases. While many traits are inherited in a predictable manner, some can be influenced by environmental factors or interactions between multiple genes.

The study of genetics dates back to the mid-1800s with the work of Gregor Mendel, who is often considered the father of modern genetics. Through his experiments with pea plants, Mendel established the basic principles of inheritance, including the ideas of dominant and recessive traits. His work laid the foundation for understanding how traits are inherited in predictable patterns, although the molecular mechanisms were not fully understood at the time.
