Synopsis

Prologue. In 1887, at the age of 44, Nietzsche publishes ‘The Genealogy of Morality’. It is a time of self-reflection called Little Snow of the Winter of Fate. He closes the period of classical literature and devotes himself to existential philosophy by experience. By contrasting slave morality and master morality with a genealogical methodology, good and evil are transformed into the moral values of good and bad. Goodness affirms and elevates life with an aristocratic will. Badness denies and degenerates life with slavish will. The moral concept of sin is derived not from a Christian point of view, but from the material concept of a debt owed by a debtor to a creditor. Cruelty is understood as a festival of self-affirmation overcoming the nihilism of self-contempt and self-denial. ‘The Genealogy of Morality’ is the concept of Ubermensch trying to create a new value by overcoming the reality of nihilism.

What Is It Like to Be a Bat?

"Consciousness is what makes the mind-body problem really intractable." So begins Thomas Nagel's classic 1974 essay "What is it Like to be a Bat?" Nagel's essay initiated the now widespread attention to consciousness as a central problem for philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience; it also influenced the recognition of the consciousness of nonhuman creatures as an important subject of study. Nagel argued that the essential subjectivity of conscious experience—what it is like for the creature undergoing it—means that reductionist theories of mind, which attempt to analyze it in physical terms, can never succeed. It follows that the physical sciences cannot provide a complete description of reality, and that the physical conception of objective reality must be transcended if science is going to comprehend the mind.

This edition reissues this classic and widely influential article on its fiftieth anniversary, along with a new preface discussing the origins and influence of the essay, as well as "Further Thoughts: The Psychophysical Nexus," a supplementary essay which describes Nagel's later thoughts about how to respond to the problem posed by "What Is It Like to Be a Bat?"

    The Shortest History of Migration

*Released early for the UK election.*

From our earliest wanderings to the rise of the digital nomad, here is the story of human migration.

For hundreds of thousands of years, the ability of Homo sapiens to travel across vast distances and adapt to new environments has been key to our survival as a species. Yet this deep migratory impulse is being tested as never before. By building ever stronger walls and raising barriers to progress, governments are harming the lives of migrants and threatening the future well-being of our societies.

In The Shortest History of Migration, a visionary thinker tells a story of the movement of peoples that spans every age and continent and goes to the heart of what makes us human. Drawn from ancient records and the latest genetic research, it recounts strange, terrible and uplifting tales of migrants past and present, examining the legacies of empire, slavery and war.

Finally, Goldin turns his attention to today's world, bringing together the evidence of history with the most recent data to suggest how we might create a more humane future -- one that allows us to reap the tremendous benefits that migration can offer.
