Our Miss Brooks was a big radio hit from the get go. Eve Arden may not have been the original first choice but she made the role her own and gathered individual awards by the armful.

All the way up until its debut in 1949 women had been, as in much of life, the subordinate gender, supporters and flag-wavers rather than equals or the stars.

Our Miss Brooks helped change that. Here was a woman, not confined to life as a housewife. She was confident, funny and layered with sometimes conflicting emotions, trying to gain a boyfriend of her choosing and holding down a job as a high-school teacher. It was quite a menu.

Jeff Chandler played her shy biology teacher love interest, Mr Boynton. And the dynamics and laughs between themselves, the students, their colleagues, and principal, all played by a very fine cast, make this situation comedy one of radios funniest and finest.

    -Let’s go join the fun.

The Inner Game of music is that which takes place in the mind, played against such elusive opponents as nervousness, self doubt, and fear of failure. Using the same principles of "natural learning" W. Timothy Gallwey developed so successfully for tennis, golf, and skiing and applying them to his own field, noted musician Barry Green shows how to acknowledge and overcome these internal obstacles in order to bring a new quality to the experience and learning of music. It is also ideal for those who don't play an instrument but who feel their appreciation of music will be enhanced if they understand more about the process of playing. In precise, easy to understand language, Green and Gallwey explain how natural skills can be nurtured and enhanced, and through a series of special exercises they demonstrate the ways in which musicians can achieve exact intonation, artistic phrasing, and improved technique.Ensemble playing, improvisation, composition and creativity, and listening skills are discussed throughout.A methodology with a proven track record, this will be invaluable to anyone seriously interested in music, professional or amateur, composer, performer, or an appreciative listener.

Why your worst nightmares about watching horror movies are unfoundedFilms about chainsaw killers, demonic possession, and ghostly intruders make some of us scream with joy. But while horror fans are attracted to movies designed to scare us, others shudder already at the thought of the sweatdrenched nightmares that terrifying movies often trigger. The fear of sleepless nights and the widespread beliefs that horror movies can have negative psychological effects and display immorality make some of us very, very nervous about them. But should we be concerned? In this book, horror-expert Mathias Clasen delves into the psychological science of horror cinema to bust some of the worst myths and correct the biggest misunderstandings surrounding the genre. In short and highly readable chapters peppered with vivid anecdotes and examples, he addresses the nervous person’s most pressing questions: What are the effects of horror films on our mental and physical health? Why do they often cause nightmares? Aren’t horror movies immoral and a bad influence on children and adolescents? Shouldn’t we be concerned about what the current popularity of horror movies says about society and its values? While media psychologists have demonstrated that horror films indeed have the potential to harm us, Clasen reveals that the scientific evidence also contains a second story that is often overlooked: horror movies can also help us confront and manage fear and bring us closer together.

Before Bob & Ray, comedians told jokes. After Bob & Ray, they told stories. When they first got together in 1946 on WHDH-AM Boston, no one guessed that their subtle, intelligent, deadpan brand of humor would revolutionize the comedic landscape. With a gift for an improvisation and a keen understanding of the absurd, Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding created a universe of wonderful characters and rewrote the rules for what’s funny. Consider any important comedy star since—Bob Newhart, Garrison Keillor, Woody Allen, Johnny Carson, George Carlin, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Jerry Seinfeld—and you can hear the debt to Bob & Ray. This collection honors the two and only with selections from their early years (1950s, ’60s, and ’70s) and public radio years (’80s), their 1984 Carnegie Hall performances, and previously unreleased archival recordings.
