Synopsis

Hey, ever wondered what it’d take to call Mars home? Mars Humanity Next Dawn is your front-row seat to that wild ride. We’re talking about humanity’s leap from Earth’s cozy cradle into the cosmic unknown, starting with the Soviet Union’s Sputnik beep in ’57 and landing on SpaceX’s bold 2026 Mars dreams. This book unpacks it all—how we’ve cracked space tech, decoded Mars’ rusty secrets, and started building a future up there. You’ll dive into the Cold War’s lunar showdowns, marvel at Martian volcanoes, and peek at the water hiding under its surface. From NASA’s Artemis to China’s Tianwen-1, we explore how nations and companies like SpaceX are racing to plant roots on the Red Planet.

Think of it as a cosmic playbook—practical stuff like 3D-printed Mars shelters, oxygen from CO2, and even the ethics of terraforming. It’s not just tech; it’s people too—how we’ll handle isolation, govern new worlds, and maybe even tweak our DNA to thrive. The book spans history, science, and imagination, from Soviet triumphs to India’s budget Mars win, all while asking big questions: Who owns space? What’s life worth out there? With fresh insights from rover data, astronaut studies, and bold thinkers like Carl Sagan, it’s a story of grit, genius, and the next chapter for us all. So, grab a coffee, and let’s chat about Mars—it’s closer than you think!

An exuberant, incisive look at how Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater transformed a culture

Going from a hobby toy for surfers to an Olympic sport, skateboarding has had a tumultuous history. Today, professional skateboarders land endorsement deals with Nike and Adidas, while popular television series like HBO’s Betty tell the stories of diverse crews of skaters living in New York City. So how did a fledgling subculture rise from its near-death knell in the ’90s to become ubiquitous today? It was simply a matter of finding the right messenger.

In 1999, the bestselling video game Tony Hawk’sPro Skater was released, and a new generation was exposed to skateboarding culture right in their very own homes. Kids and adults alike could now spend hours playing as actual skateboarders, learning the vernacular, listening to the music skateboarders loved, and having fun onscreen before trying to skate IRL in the driveway.

Right, Down + Circle explores how a video game starring the most famous pro skater in the world brought skateboarding culture ― and its ever-shifting markers of music, subversion, and coolness ― to the masses and ultimately transformed the culture it borrowed from in the process.

You are an Agile Coach and your client has asked you a question. He is an engineering manager and the company has just announced a "work from home" policy. Developers may now work from home instead of coming to the office.
The Engineering Manager has asked you if there are any "Agile Metrics" he can use to make sure his developers stay busy and are not being lazy. He is investigating software to record when people log in and log out, and count their keystrokes in between.
What should you tell him to do?
This case and the others in the series come from the real-world experiences of a group of Scrum professionals who meet regularly to discuss the Scrum Framework and how to apply it to actual situations they have encountered. These discussions have been led since 2015 by Frederik Mark Fowler, A Doctor of Scrum and Holder of the Professional Scrum Master level III certification awarded by Scrum.org. Fred has worked with the Scrum Framework for almost 20 years and has trained more then 300 people to become Scrum Masters and Product Owners. Nearly 500 years after the Spanish conquered their mighty empire, the Aztecs are often remembered today for their major capital, Tenochtitlan, as well as being fierce conquerors of the Valley of Mexico who often engaged in human sacrifice rituals. Unlike the Maya, the Aztecs are not widely viewed or remembered with nuance, in part because their own leader burned extant Aztec writings and rewrote a mythologized history explaining his empire’s dominance less than a century before the Spanish arrived. Naturally, Cortes and other Spaniards depicted the Aztecs as savages greatly in need of conversion to Catholicism. While the Maya are remembered for their astronomy, numeral system, and calendar, the Aztecs have primarily been remembered in a far narrower way, despite continuing to be a source of pride to Mexicans through the centuries.
For the Aztec, astronomy was not a purely scientific pursuit but intimately linked to religious, mythological, and ideological elements that were of the highest importance. The celestial realm held a sacred nature, as did the many gods and goddesses that dwelt there, so for all Mesoamerican cultures, astronomy was a fundamental part of their daily lives. Thus, astronomy was present in their calendars, religion, and even agriculture, and in close relation to astronomy, the concept of time was also an essential part of their worldview. The Aztec recorded many of the astronomical events they observed in codices and hieroglyphic inscriptions, but the main evidence of their deep astronomical knowledge comes from their calendar system. This information was then used to plan the orientation of buildings and ceremonial centers, which were aligned to sunrises or sunsets corresponding to special dates, such as solstices or equinoxes. Observational calendars were also used to schedule agricultural activities, as well as rituals, festivals, and celebrations, on an annual cycle.
