Synopsis

In "The Life of Tolstoy: First Fifty Years," Aylmer Maude provides a comprehensive and engaging biography that meticulously chronicles the early life of the renowned Russian author Leo Tolstoy. Maude's narrative is imbued with a blend of scholarly rigor and personal insight, drawing from rich anecdotes and direct observations, which allows readers to grasp the complexity of Tolstoy's character and the influences that shaped his literary genius. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century Russia, the text explores not only Tolstoy's evolving philosophical beliefs but also the cultural and social currents of his time, thereby offering a multi-dimensional view of the man behind masterpieces like "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina. Aylmer Maude, a close friend and biographer of Tolstoy, brings a unique perspective to this work, having been deeply influenced by Tolstoy's ideas on morality, simplicity, and the pursuit of truth. Maude's experiences as a social activist and literary figure in his own right provide ample context for his admiration of Tolstoy, allowing him to present an intimate portrait of the author's formative years. His firsthand encounters with Tolstoy lend authenticity and depth to the biography, making it not only a scholarly work but also a personal homage. Maude's careful research and evocative prose create a compelling narrative that will engage both seasoned Tolstoy enthusiasts and those new to his world. This biography serves as an essential companion to Tolstoy's works, illuminating the pivotal experiences that would influence his groundbreaking ideas and writings.

A gripping history of one Norwegian immigrant family’s experience in the United States from the mid-nineteenth century to World War II.

In the spring of 1853, a family of eight drove their wagon to the wharf in Bergen, Norway. They unloaded their belongings alongside the other stacks labeled, AMERICA, MINNESOTA, ILLINOIS, MICHIGAN, NEW YORK CITY, CHICAGO and boarded the crowded ship.

Hopeful, nervous Norwegians—giving up everything for a place they knew of only through second-hand tales of freedom and opportunity—watched as the shoreline retreated, knowing they would never see their homeland again. Their trip ahead would be spent in cramped conditions for two or three months until they reached Ellis Island. The United States, where they were immigrating to, was facing many problems including tensions over slavery and the subsequent beginning of the Civil War.

The family moved west to farm the free land that was offered to them but were met with resistance, as it was land that had been cultivated by Native Americans for thousands of years before. The family was nearly eliminated during these times, often referred to as the American Indian Wars.

Future generations carried on to the Dakotas and Alberta with difficulties. These Norwegians persisted. Through ardent research and narrative biography, Robert Dodge reflects on the immigrant experience of one Norwegian family from the mid-nineteenth century through World War II in Fields of Fortune: ‘Viking’ Farmers in America.
