Beschreibung

In "Horace Walpole: A Memoir," Austin Dobson presents a meticulously researched account of one of the 18th century's most intriguing literary figures. Blending biographical narrative with critical analysis, Dobson deftly examines Walpole's multifaceted life as a writer, politician, and art connoisseur against the backdrop of the socio-political landscape of his time. The memoir is enriched with period-appropriate linguistic elegance, harmonizing with Walpole's own style, embodying the wit and sophistication that defined the era of the Enlightenment. Through an insightful exploration of Walpole's correspondence and literary works, Dobson sheds light on his contributions to Gothic fiction and the novel form, providing a comprehensive understanding of Walpole's significance in literary history. Austin Dobson (1840-1921), an influential poet and biographer, was deeply immersed in the literary circles of his time. His admiration for the complexities of 18th-century literature and his own experiences in the literary world shaped his perspective on Walpole. Dobson's background as a writer in the Victorian era, coupled with his fascination for the Rococo artistry and historical narratives, led him to explore Walpole's life, drawing parallels between their eras while engaging with the nuances of Walpole's character and legacy. This memoir stands as an essential read for anyone interested in the roots of Gothic literature and the evolution of the novel. Dobson's dedication to unveiling Walpole's life not only preserves the legacy of an underrated figure but also invites readers to reflect on the interplay between art and politics in shaping literary canon. Scholars and casual readers alike will find a wealth of knowledge and appreciation within these pages.

A prize-winning Belgian poet explores the nature of creative endeavor—the godlike ambition, the crushing defeat of failure—through the stories of thirteen tragic architects.

In thirteen fascinating chapters, Charlotte Van den Broeck goes in search of buildings that were fatal to their architects—architects who either killed themselves or are rumored to have done so. They range across time and space from a church with a twisted spire in seventeenth-century France to a theater that collapsed mid-performance in 1920s Washington, DC, and an eerily sinking swimming pool in the author's hometown. Drawing on a vast range of material, from Hegel and Darwin to art history, stories from her own life, and popular culture, Van den Broeck brings patterns into focus as she asks, What is that strange, life-or-death connection between a creation and its creator?

Threaded through each story is the author's meditation on the question of suicide—what Albert Camus called the "one truly serious philosophical problem"—in relation to creativity and public disgrace. The result is a profoundly idiosyncratic book, breaking ground in literary nonfiction, as well as providing solace and consolation to anyone who has ever attempted a creative act.

The most eye-opening, and terrifying, story in Chip Reid's career as a journalist was the six weeks he spent with 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, as a correspondent for NBC News. Traveling shoulder-to-shoulder with the young Marines, he had unparalleled access, witnessing them in combat, and interviewing as many as he could persuade his bosses to put on air, allowing them to tell their war stories in their own words.

It took only twenty-two days for the Marines of 3/5 to fight their way to Baghdad, but the effects on those who fought have lasted a lifetime. They lost a number of their own in battle, and others suffered life-threatening injuries. Many have had to find their own way through survivor's guilt and the nightmare of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, with all its attendant miseries.

Twenty years on, Chip sat down with the Marines of 3/5 once more. They told Chip inspiring stories of heroism in battle, of camaraderie and comrades lost, of patriotism and belief in mission, of recovery and success in both military and civilian life, and of the new appreciation for life that results from Post-Traumatic Growth. Visceral and searingly honest, this book is a tribute to the Marines for their service, and for the many sacrifices they made then, and that many still make today.

This enhanced audiobook edition includes nearly two hours of raw and uncut interviews with Marines of 3/5 recorded in preparation for writing this book.

In late October 2006, one of the most spectacular kidnapping cases of the younger past had come to end, when Natascha Kampusch freed herself after being held captive in a hidden cellar (near Vienna, Austria) for more than eight years. Media companies from all over the world came to cover her life story, which has taken quite some twists since then. The result: two autobiographies, a feature film, several documentaries and hundreds of interviews – all within a decade.

"10 Years of Freedom" offers us an insight into the impact such a nightmarish captivity has on a young woman's life. It tells the story of a naive victim, that had to learn to cope with the real world after being locked away for her whole youth. The author spans a wide range of themes from her first days in freedom and the turbulent times after gaining it again to a never-ending trauma, which she will have to deal with for the rest of her life. Natascha declares that she wasn't prepared to be a public figure after all, but was suddenly confronted with a heavy and controversial media coverage (including speculations by reporters regarding Stockholm syndrome and roleplaying, along with being labelled "cellar girl" and "sex slave"). Also, wild conspiracy theories gained popularity, resulting in several trials and review boards (including police and FBI investigations). Despite everything, she found certain ways to reconnect with her family and even founded/initiated several charity projects (e.g. the creation of a children's ward in Sri Lanka or the support of PETA, an organisation for animal rights).
