Experiencing abuse and neglect in childhood can lead to adverse outcomes in adulthood.
Adult survivors of untreated child abuse often suffer a range of long-term detrimental effects that adversely affect their functioning in numerous areas of their lives. Unfortunately, the enduring impact of chronic abuse in childhood is not well understood. This book is focused on increasing understanding of the long-term effects of traumatic childhood experiences from both psychological and physiological perspectives. Additionally, this book explores whether pathology frequently seen in adult survivors is a direct or secondary effect of their abuse. Along with scientific and theoretical text-based data, solicited written narratives by an adult survivor of childhood physical, sexual, and psychological abuse are analyzed utilizing hermeneutic methodology with elements of grounded theory to discover relevant connections between the fields of neuroscience, memory research, attachment theory, and trauma research. The relevance of findings of the diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is discussed, and the implications for clinical practice are explored.

By the end of the Byzantine Empire’s existence, the old age had weakened both the state and church, making it an easy target for invading forces.
The most notable invaders were the the Turkish-speaking Seljuks, led through a series of battles by Kutalmishouglu Suleiman, who supported different usurpers against the Byzantine emperor. The expansion of the Seljuks was so successful that when Suleiman died, he had put all of Bithynia under his control as well as several important harbor towns along the shores on the Asian side of Bosphorus. With that accomplishment, he had managed to separate the Byzantines living in Anatolia from their emperor in Constantinople. This immediately weakened the unity of the Byzantine Empire.
When another invading Muslim army took control of what is now Syria, Israel, and Northern Africa, the dismembered Byzantine Empire lost significant portions of land, but that allowed it to grow into a smaller and stronger unity. It took a lot of power struggles and battles on many fronts for the empire to recapture some of the lands, but gradually the Byzantine Empire lost all influence in Anatolia. By the end of the 11th century, the Hellenic culture and Greek language were replaced by Islam and Turkish.
Of all the conflicts that brought this state of affairs into being, few were as instrumental as the Battle of Kapetron, the culmination of one of the first major Seljuk raids into Byzantine territory. It represented not just a clash of ethnicities, cultures, and religions, but also a harbinger of a changing of the guard, and one that would shape geopolitics in the region for the next several centuries.

A brilliant look at colonialism and its effects in Antigua—by the author of Annie John

"If you go to Antigua as a tourist, this is what you will see. If you come by aeroplane, you will land at the V. C. Bird International Airport. Vere Cornwall (V. C.) Bird is the Prime Minister of Antigua. You may be the sort of tourist who would wonder why a Prime Minister would want an airport named after him—why not a school, why not a hospital, why not some great public monument. You are a tourist and you have not yet seen . . ."

So begins Jamaica Kincaid's expansive essay, which shows us what we have not yet seen of the ten-by-twelve-mile island in the British West Indies where she grew up.

Lyrical, sardonic, and forthright by turns, in a Swiftian mode, A Small Place cannot help but amplify our vision of one small place and all that it signifies.

"Democracy: The Political Tale" pulls readers into an exciting exploration of government complexities, directed by the author's own intimate experiences with democracy and tyranny. Leaning upon real-life events, the account digs deep into the profound effects of being forced out from a dictatorship nation and thereafter growing up in a democracy. The striking distinction between these structures influences the author's thorough study of representative democracy.
This book points out the issues in the way democratic systems currently work. It talks about how these systems struggle to handle the ever-changing, intricate demands of our present-day world. Elected officials becoming disconnected and a small group of people rule, despite a lack of public support, are clearly detailed—this reveals weakness in the system. The book uses smart examples to show times when agreement on vital matters couldn't be reached. It also delves into the trials presented by today's growth and society. All these details help champion the need for enhancements to our current system.
When the writer doubts the power of our representative democracy, a strong urge comes for decisions to include more folks and be more clear. The final parts of the book reveal personal stories, underlining the vital part democracy plays, but also being honest about its flaws. Calling for big fixes that can truly help society, "Democracy: The Political Saga" is a strong affirmation of the continuous search for a way to rule that fits well with today's complex world.
