  This book, like the first of the series the Book of the Ancient World, was used in its original manuscript form by one of my history classes. It carries on the story of the way in which man has been learning how to live from the time of the Coming of the Greeks to the loss of Greek independence in 146 B.C.The spirit of a nation is expressed and its history is recorded in three ways: in its political history, in its literature and in its art. The aim of this book has been to use such parts of the political history of the Greeks, of their literature and of their art as seem to have been the outward and visible signs of the spirit that inspired them.This book is only intended as an introduction to the history of Greek civilization, and the difficulty of my task has been to decide on what to omit. Everyone will not agree with me as to what I have taken and what I have left, but my aim will have been accomplished, if the book should create a desire to know something more of the great heritage which has come to us from the Greeks.

  The American colonies in the mid-18th century were a thriving part of the British Empire, but tensions had been brewing for decades. What began as minor grievances over trade and governance escalated into a full-scale rebellion. British policies, aimed at tightening control over the colonies, ignited widespread dissatisfaction, planting the seeds of revolution. 
  One of the earliest sources of discontent was the British system of taxation. The Sugar Act of 1764 and the Stamp Act of 1765 imposed direct levies on the colonies, enraging merchants, publishers, and legal professionals. The colonists, who had no direct representation in the British Parliament, saw these taxes as a blatant overreach. Their rallying cry—“No taxation without representation”—became a defining slogan of the growing resistance. The Stamp Act’s repeal in 1766 provided temporary relief, but the British government soon followed with new policies, including the Townshend Acts, which further strained relations. 
  The presence of British troops in colonial cities only exacerbated tensions. Stationed to enforce British laws and maintain order, soldiers were often viewed as an occupying force. Clashes between civilians and the military became frequent, culminating in the infamous Boston Massacre of 1770, where British troops fired into a crowd of unarmed colonists, killing five. This event, heavily publicized by Patriot leaders, fueled anti-British sentiment and strengthened calls for defiance.

This hostile environment had already claimed the lives of many seasoned infantrymen. But the Top Guns weren't infantrymen, they were artillerymen, deployed without their usual weapons and with minimal last-minute training, redesignated as "provisional infantrymen."   George Eliot's 1859 novella, The Lifted Veil, departs radically from the grounded realism of her longer and better known works, such as Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda. Its tone calls to mind the works of middlebrow Sensationists, like Wilkie Collins (The Moonstone), and of some of the better known authors of Victorian era horror writings, such as Bram Stoker (Dracula) and Mary Shelley (Frankenstein).Eliot here explores mystical themes, considering the world of phenomena which are felt but not seen. Yet in doing so she suggests that the apparent clairvoyance of her main character, Latimer, may in fact be, at least in part, psychological expressions of his early life experiences. This view is supported by the fact that most of Latimer's vision-based predictions of how people will behave and events unfold do not, in the end, turn out as he had foretold.Much of this work's power and complexity lie in Latimer's relationship with Bertha, whom he ultimately, unhappily, marries. Bertha is the one person whose thoughts and feelings he is not able to read, raising the question: What is it about Bertha that renders her inaccessible to his psychic penetration – and what does this tell us about her, and about him.
