Synopsis

Arthur Stringer's 'Hephaestus, Persephone at Enna, and Sappho in Leucadia' emerges as a luminous exploration of enduring Greek mythic narratives, blending poetic finesse with the timeless allure of ancient lore. Stringer revives the classical figures of Hephaestus, the crippled god of fire and craftsmanship, Persephone, the maiden of vegetation thrust into the underworld, and the revered lyric poetess Sappho. With a deft hand, Stringer weaves a tapestry of emotions and ethereal imagery in this verse drama, capturing the spirit of Greek mythology within a fabric of modern poetics, situating the work within the broader tradition of mythopoeic revival in literary modernism. The literary style juxtaposes a rich linguistic heritage with the symbolic weight of myth, offering a resounding echo of perennial human preoccupations and artistic expressions.

Arthur Stringer, a luminary of Canadian letters, possessed a breadth of talent as a novelist, a dramatist, and a screenwriter that informed his approach to narrative and character. His journey into the heart of Greek mythology in 'Hephaestus, Persephone at Enna, and Sappho in Leucadia' suggests an intimate kinship with ancient traditions of storytelling and a deep appreciation for the cultural reservoirs from which these stories spring. It is conceivable that Stringer's own experiences and scholarly interests led him to distill the essence of Greek mythology through the lens of his poetic imagination, thus creating an intercultural bridge between classical antiquity and the modern reader.

The book is highly recommended for aficionados of classical mythology and poetry alike. It promises a rich literary encounter that defies the temporal boundaries of storytelling, proving that the human search for meaning and beauty is indeed unfettered by age. Readers willing to immerse themselves in Stringer's rhythmic cadences will rediscover the potency and relevance of myths through a voice that reverberates with both devotion to ancient tales and the freshness of contemporary poetic sensibility. 'Hephaestus, Persephone at Enna, and Sappho in Leucadia' presents not only a reanimation of classic themes but also an invitation to ponder the immutable resonances of these myths in our modern psyches.

In the Skagit River Valley, gateway to the pristine Pacific Northwest wilderness, vegetation, birds, and people are inexplicitly dying. A long-standing spat over property rights threatens to escalate into a fight involving all of Concrete, Washington, as unexplained events raise suspicions about long-buried secrets.

CATASTROPHIC MOLTING (FlowerSong Press) Amy Shimshon-Santo uses the tools of language to remind readers there is power in repudiation, comfort in collective mourning, and possibility in reimagining. The book title is inspired by the molting ritual of sea elephants (Mirounga Angustirostris) along the California coast. The mirounga rest together on the shore as social protection from violence when they are the most vulnerable. Only through these periods of dramatic change can they grow sleek new coats. The book’s journey begins with “Contagion,” revealing a world split in half like a calabash by a virus. “Beating, trembling,” a woman pleads for mercy while the poems confront the liminality of profound change. “A new cycle had begun / I would never be the same again.” The second section, Sangue, gives voice to mourning and rage. “when you murder the future of music / you are conjuring extinction.” Dysfunction on planet Earth reverberates from the street into the expansive galaxy. Refusing to normalize violence, the poet gathers war inside her own body to detonate it, then blows “tsunami-wind / to rattle clear the desks.” With the verve of Oya, the goddess of ancestral and radical change, the book claims ground for empathy and inter-being. The collection asks readers to imagine: “what if we were a part of a whole / that loved us without ceasing?” Catastrophic Molting breaks from inertia and seeks new ground. Our “foremothers greet the unborn” and are “betrothed to a story that doesn’t wish us dead.” Shimshon-Santo suggests that “stepping off might actually be, stepping in / turning away might actually be, turning toward.”

What’s in a word? Apart from its value as a unit of information is there something more? Of course. Many words sound and express themselves, when rolled around the soul and mouth, as something both desirable, tangible and complete. We submit that ‘Wanderlust’ has just such a feeling.

Most of us have an urge to journey, to take the body and mind on a journey that will sate our curiosity, build our experiences and memories and prepare ourselves for yet another.

Whether as a child journeying wide-eyed through a field, a teenager exploring hitherto forbidden zones or as adults embarking on journeys that may change our lives and relationships with new cultures, foods and sounds - it seems as if we just can’t get no satisfaction till the next far-off place.

In this volume of classic poetry our wordsmiths are our companions on journeys near and far. They describe and create worlds that we can explore with them, word by word and line by line.

In the company of Keats, Wordsworth, Bronte, Whitman, Kipling and a wealth of others these journeys in verse will be like no other.
