Beschreibung

In "The Tale of Nimble Deer," part of the beloved Sleepy-Time Tales series, Arthur Scott Bailey skillfully weaves a narrative that captivates young readers with its charming simplicity and enchanting moral lessons. Set against the backdrop of a serene woodland, this tale follows the adventures of a nimble deer who faces both challenges and friendships as he navigates the dangers and delights of his natural habitat. Bailey employs a lyrical yet accessible prose style, ensuring that the story resonates not only with children but also with parents and educators who appreciate rich storytelling. The use of personable animal characters allows Bailey to subtly impart messages about courage, kindness, and the importance of community in overcoming adversity. Arthur Scott Bailey (1877-1949) was a master storyteller whose works often drew inspiration from the rural American landscape and its inhabitants. Growing up in the heart of nature, Bailey developed a profound appreciation for wildlife, which is vividly illustrated in his storytelling. His background as a journalist and editor uniquely equipped him to craft engaging narratives that would not only entertain but also educate young minds, as seen in this delightful installment of Sleepy-Time Tales. I highly recommend "The Tale of Nimble Deer" as an essential addition to any young reader's library. Its timeless themes and captivating narrative make it a perfect bedtime story that encourages imagination and reflection, while its gentle lessons on resilience are sure to leave a lasting impression. This book is a wonderful gateway into the world of literature for children and an ideal reading experience for adults to share with them.

The Last Drive by Carl Jacobi - A short story of a grisly ride through a blizzard with a corpse!
It was a cold wind that whipped across the hills that November evening. There was snow in the air, and Jeb Waters in the cab of his jolting van shivered and drew the collar of his sheepskin higher about the throat. All day endless masses of white cumulus cloud had raced across a cheerless sky. They were gray now, those clouds, leaden gray, and so low-hanging they seemed to lie like a pall on the crest of each distant hillock. Off to the right, strn and majestic, like a great parade of H. G. Wells’ Martian creatures, marched the towers of the Eastern States Power lines, the only evidence here of present-day civilization. A low humming whine rose from the taut wires now as the mounting wind twanged them in defiance.
Through the windshield Jeb Waters scanned the sky anxiously.
"It’s going to be a cold trip back,” he muttered to himself. “Looks mighty like a blizzard startin’.”

If you don't like Christmas stories, don't read this one! And if you don't like dogs I don't know just what to advise you to do! For I warn you perfectly frankly that I am distinctly pro-dog and distinctly pro-Christmas, and would like to bring to this little story whatever whiff of fir-balsam I can cajole from the make-believe forest in my typewriter, and every glitter of tinsel, smudge of toy candle, crackle of wrapping paper, that my particular brand of brain and ink can conjure up on a single keyboard! And very large-sized dogs shall romp through every page! And the mercury shiver perpetually in the vicinity of zero! And every foot of earth be crusty-brown and bare with no white snow at all till the very last moment when you'd just about given up hope! And all the heart of the story is very,—oh very young! For purposes of propriety and general historical authenticity there are of course parents in the story. And one or two other oldish persons. But they all go away just as early in the narrative as I can manage it.—Are obliged to go away! Yet lest you find in this general combination of circumstances some sinister threat of audacity, let me conventionalize the story at once by opening it at that most conventional of all conventional Christmas-story hours,—the Twilight of Christmas Eve."
