Synopsis

Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) was one of the most influential playwrights and novelists of "Findeus Siecle Vienna" (Wiener Moderne). His figure is fascinating not only for his literary merit, but also for the way he combined his medical training with his exploration of the human soul. He is famous for introducing the interior monologue (or stream of consciousness) to German-language literature with the short story Lieutenant Gustl (1900). This technique allowed him to explore the most intimate and often contradictory thoughts of his protagonists, unmasking the hypocrisies of Austro-Hungarian society.Published in 1903, The Fate of Baron Von Leisenbohg is considered one of Arthur Schnitzler’s most brilliant and ironic short stories. It belongs to the tradition of the "Viennese tale", where the elegance of high society serves as a backdrop for a cruel game of fate, vanity, and psychological manipulation. The story is a masterclass in how Schnitzler blends his medical-like observation of human obsession with a sharp, almost cynical sense of humor. The narrative centers on Baron Von Leisenbohg, an aging aristocrat who has spent ten years in a patient, devoted, yet unrequited pursuit of the beautiful and famous opera singer, Kläre Heil. Kläre e, known for her numerous lovers and volatile nature, finally makes a strange promise to the Baron: she will be his, but only after she has "finished" with her current lifestyle.

Tough and demanding LAPD Detective Kate Delafield is the leader of the investigation into a high-rise office building murder. The case is intriguing but routine—until Kate interviews the only witness, Ellen O'Neil.

When Ellen O'Neil took her new job over the objections of her lover, she wasn't expecting to become embroiled in murder. The curiosity that Kate Delafield rouses is equally unexpected. But it is never far from Ellen's mind that she is merely a name on an interview sheet to the tight-lipped detective.

Kate's thin trail of clues are enough to convince her that she is looking for an amateur, and amateurs are notoriously unpredictable and dangerous. She finds her path increasingly intersecting with that of Ellen O'Neil, who is proving unpredictable and dangerous in a far more personal way.

May 1816: Jane Austen is feeling unwell, with an uneasy stomach, constant fatigue, rashes, fevers and aches. She attributes her poor condition to the stress of family burdens, which even the drafting of her latest manuscript—about a
baronet’s daughter nursing a broken heart for a daring naval captain—cannot alleviate. Her apothecary recommends a trial of the curative waters at Cheltenham Spa, in Gloucestershire. Jane decides to use some of the profits
earned from her last novel, Emma, and treat herself to a period of rest and reflection at the spa, in the company of her sister Cassandra.

Cheltenham Spa hardly turns out to be the relaxing sojourn Jane and Cassandra envisaged, however. It is immediately obvious that other boarders at the guest house where the Misses Austen are staying have come to Cheltenham with
stresses of their own—some of them deadly. But perhaps with Jane’s interference a terrible crime might be prevented.

Set during the Year Without a Summer, when the eruption of Mount Tambora in the South Pacific caused a volcanic winter that shrouded the entire planet for sixteen months, this fourteenth installment in Stephanie Barron’s critically
acclaimed series brings a forgotten moment of Regency history to life.
