Beschreibung

In "The Ship of Stars," Arthur Quiller-Couch weaves a rich tapestry of narrative that elegantly blends elements of fantasy, adventure, and philosophical inquiry. Set against a backdrop of ethereal landscapes and spirited seafarers, the book explores the quest for meaning and the human condition amid the vast and unfathomable universe. Quiller-Couch employs a lyrical prose style that elevates the reader's experience, skillfully balancing vivid imagery with profound introspection. This work is situated within the broader canon of early 20th-century British literature, reflecting the period's preoccupation with escapism and the search for identity in the face of modernity's challenges. Arthur Quiller-Couch, known for his role as a literary critic and his contributions to the Cornish literary scene, was infused with an appreciation for storytelling that celebrated the intersection of mythology and the natural world. His background as an academic and his deep-rooted love for maritime lore and regional culture undoubtedly influenced "The Ship of Stars," allowing him to create a narrative both enchanting and contemplative. Quiller-Couch's broader literary endeavors, including his emphasis on narrative coherence and stylistic elegance, shine through in this work. I highly recommend "The Ship of Stars" to readers seeking a profound literary voyage that stirs the imagination while probing the complexities of existence. Quiller-Couch's masterful storytelling and evocative prose can transport readers not only through celestial realms but also into the depths of their own introspection, making this novel a must-read for those who appreciate literature that engages both heart and mind.

"The Bishop's Apron" is a novel written by W. Somerset Maugham, a British playwright and author, first published in 1906. The book is known for its wit, humor, and exploration of themes related to social class, morality, and the clergy.

The novel is set in the fictional English cathedral town of Polchester and revolves around the lives of the clergy, particularly the Bishop of Polchester, Archdeacon Cuthbert, and the charming and somewhat unconventional Canon Ronder. The story's central plot is set in motion when the Bishop loses his cherished apron, an heirloom with great sentimental value. The missing apron leads to a series of misunderstandings, secrets, and humorous situations involving the clergy and the local community.

As the narrative unfolds, Maugham delves into the lives and relationships of the clergy, revealing their human foibles, desires, and struggles beneath their respectable exteriors. The characters grapple with questions of morality, faith, and the tension between their spiritual callings and earthly desires.

"The Bishop's Apron" is often classified as a social satire and comedy of manners. Maugham employs his signature wit and keen observation of human nature to create a humorous and satirical portrayal of the clergy and the society in which they live. Through his characters, he explores the hypocrisy and absurdity often associated with the upper echelons of society and the church.

While "The Bishop's Apron" may not be as well-known as some of Maugham's other works like "Of Human Bondage" or "The Razor's Edge," it remains a noteworthy contribution to his body of work. The novel provides a window into the Edwardian era in England and offers a witty and entertaining examination of the human condition, morality, and the quirks of English society.

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on 24th September 1896 in Saint Paul, Minnesota into an upper-middle class family. Whilst his mother was pregnant with him, his two young sisters tragically died. Fitzgerald once said this was when his destiny as a writer was ordained.

His intelligence and talent was recognised from an early age, with his first story, about a detective being published in the school magazine when he was just 13.

In 1913 he enrolled at Princeton but his devotion to his own literary pursuits resulted in him leaving and, rather bizarrely, joining the Army. In 1918, stationed at Fort Sheridan near Montgomery, Alabama he met and became infatuated and then inseparable from Zelda Sayre. Initially though she refused to marry him but with the success of ‘This Side of Paradise’, the fame and the flow of money enabled them both to begin a gilded life. For them this was The Jazz Age. For Fitzgerald he was already an alcoholic.

He continued to write with great mastery and the titles of his novels and many of his 164 short stories are household names. The Great Gatsby, often cited as The Great American Novel was published to mixed reviews. As America moved from the Great Depression to the slaughter of the Second World War his works and himself were seen as far too entwined with the decadent twenties. The world had moved on and he hadn’t.

Further tragedy was never far from his life. Zelda after years of erratic and now intolerable behaviour was committed to an institution in 1936. His own sales began to decline and he became a hack for hire in Hollywood, dependent on increasing amounts of booze and the weekly pay check. His drunken state had often resulted in arrest or hospitalisation, further imperiling his talents. Despite his contribution to many MGM films he received only one credit.

The end came all too soon for one of America’s greatest ever writers. On 21st December 1940, at only 44 years of age in Hollywood, F Scott Fitzgerald succumbed to a heart attack.

In this bittersweet story of a man who enjoyed the boom years of la dolce vita and now, in more straitened times, is unable to get what he really wants; the custody of his daughter. He returns to Paris to meet the ghosts of those good times and to make amends for his past.
