Sinossi

In "The Hole in the Wall," Arthur Morrison crafts a riveting narrative set in the gritty underbelly of London's East End, artfully blending elements of social realism and crime fiction. The story revolves around the character of a young man, Emile, who grapples with the complexities of poverty and moral choice amid the harsh realities of his surroundings. Morrison employs a stark, unadorned prose style that captures the raw atmosphere of a time and place often overlooked in Victorian literature, providing readers with insightful commentary on class disparities and human resilience. Arthur Morrison, known for his keen observations of working-class life, draws upon his own experiences growing up in the East End of London. Having witnessed the struggles and aspirations of the impoverished, Morrison's writing reflects a deep empathy for his characters and a commitment to illuminating their plight. His background as a journalist adds layers of authenticity to the narrative, as he brings both meticulous detail and an engaging storytelling technique to the forefront. This book is highly recommended for those interested in social justice, Victorian literature, and the exploration of the human condition. Morrison's vivid portrayal of life on the fringes of society resonates powerfully today, inviting readers to consider the enduring relevance of his themes.

As an undercover operative for the Office of Strategic Services during World War II, Evelyn Bishop routinely embarked on deadly missions. By contrast, civilian life should be simple. Yet Evelyn, now back in Los Angeles, struggles with the responsibility of being the new president of Bishop Aeronautics, when people see her as nothing more than a beautiful socialite.

With Nick Gallagher, at least, Evelyn can be entirely herself. Once a fellow spy, now her fiancé, Nick works as a private investigator. But the mission that first brought them together is not entirely over. Evelyn receives a call from her former commanding officer, who is overseeing the Berlin Airlift. He is concerned that the Soviets are trying to recruit Kurt Vogel, a scientist Evelyn and Nick smuggled out of Nazi Germany. After six long years, there's word his wife and daughter may have survived the war. Is this a chance for a long-promised reunion, or a Russian ploy to lure Vogel to their side?

Past and present collide again when a routine case offers Nick a reunion with a childhood friend who runs a high-class "gentleman's club." Like many soldiers at the beginning of their military careers, Harry Penrose has romantic ideas of climbing the ranks and attaining hero status. However, while stationed at Gallipoli, the realities of war begin to take their toll on Penrose, not only physically, but also mentally where the war has become a 'battle of the mind.' This is his story as related by a fellow soldier, as well as the story of the campaign at Gallipoli which is vividly portrayed from the author's own personal experiences.During his tenure as an officer, Penrose slowly asserts himself; the war takes a toll on his personality, but he begins to live up to his early dreams of heroism. However, his creeping self-doubt grows by degrees; following Gallipoli, he is reassigned from his post as scouting officer once on the Somme, knowing he cannot face another night patrol, and earns the wrath of his commanding officer - an irascible Regular colonel - over a trivial incident. The colonel piles difficult, risky work on him - remarking to the narrator that "Master Penrose can go on with [leading ration parties] until he learns to do them properly" - and Penrose submits, working doggedly to try and keep from cracking. After a long period of this treatment, by the winter of 1916, Penrose's spirit is worn down. What follows his downward spiral may surprise and even shock today's readers, but was common and controversial at the time. (Introduction adapted from Wikipedia with contributions from the narrator and the proof listener.)

A heatwave melts London as Holmes and Watson are called to action in this new Sherlock Holmes adventure by Bonnie MacBird, author of “one of the best Sherlock Holmes novels of recent memory.”
In Whitechapel, a renowned Italian escape artist dies spectacularly on stage during a performance – immolated in a gleaming copper cauldron of his wife’s design. In Cambridge, the runaway daughter of a famous don drowns, her long blonde hair tangled in the Jesus Lock on the River Cam. And in Baker Street, a malevolent locksmith exacts an unusual price to open a small silver box sent to Watson.
From the glow of the London stage to the buzzing Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, where physicists explore the edges of new science of electricity, Holmes and Watson race between the two cities to solve the murders, encountering prevaricating prestidigitators, philandering physicists and murderous mentalists, all the while unlocking secrets which may be best left undisclosed. And one, in particular, lands very close to home.
In this historical fiction, the suspense is palpable as Holmes and Watson navigate the thrilling world of crime and mystery. The traditional detective procedural is turned on its head as they race against time, unlocking secrets that may be best left undisclosed.
For fans of James Lovegrove (Sherlock Holmes and the Christmas Demon), M. K. Wiseman (Sherlock Holmes & the Ripper of Whitechapel), Anthony Horowitz (Marble Hall Murders), Richard T. Ryan (The Poisoned Pawn), and Richard Osman (The Impossible Fortune).
