Synopsis

In "With My Regiment: From the Aisne to La Bassée," Arthur Mills delivers a poignant and immersive account of his experiences as a soldier during World War I. The narrative unfolds with vivid descriptions of battlefields, camaraderie among troops, and the psychological toll of war, all conveyed through a lyrical yet accessible literary style. Mills' transparent prose reflects the raw emotions and harsh realities faced by soldiers, situating the work within a broader context of war literature that critiques both the valor and futility of conflict. This memoir serves not only as a historical record but also as a personal exploration of identity amid chaos. Arthur Mills, a dedicated officer who served in the trenches, brings an authentic voice to his writing shaped by his firsthand encounters with the horrors of warfare. His background and personal experiences provide a compelling lens through which he interprets the events that defined a generation. Mills' ability to weave personal reflection with historical narrative offers a unique perspective on the complexities of duty, sacrifice, and survival. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in military history, memoirs of courage, and the psychological impact of the First World War. Mills' evocative storytelling not only enriches our understanding of a pivotal historical moment but also invites readers to reflect on the enduring humanity amidst the devastation of war.

"In the following pages I have endeavoured to give the reader a plain, honest, homespun account of my state in life, and some few of the difficulties which have attended me along its journey, down to this time. I am perfectly aware, that I have related many small and, as I fear, uninteresting circumstances; but if so, my apology is, that it was rendered necessary by a desire to link the different periods of my life together, as they have passed, from my childhood onward, and thereby to enable the reader to select such parts of it as he may relish most, if, indeed, there is any thing in it which may suit his palate."

As the government continues to trap black males into abnormal and senseless lives, black men are revolting against authority and common sense. They must be numb or dumb to the positive legacy their black leaders presented to them. Black-on-black crime is outrageous, and black men need to understand as long as they live, white Americans and this government are at war with them, and they have to readjust their thinking and fight together to defeat this racist system. America's plan is to disrupt black families so white men can take our black women and make white babies, while we are dead or in prison. America's plan does not have to be black America's plan, therefore we must love one another and save black families and black communities from a racist and Republican party takeover.

When tiny voices talk, three amazing things happen: they share surprising ideas and insights; they realise they are not so tiny; and they empower other tiny voices to talk too.Drawing on the winning formula of her Tiny Voice Talks podcasts, Toria Bono has compiled a great resource full of top tips and actionable advice from a range of tiny voices across the educational spectrum. The assembled voices speak on a broad range of topics relating to education and learner development - from mentoring, metacognitive skills and period education, to trauma-informed practice, nurturing curious learners and finding flow in the classroom. But above all, this book is a call to action for all those in our schools who have yet to find their voice to find it - and use it. There are big people with big voices (and big egos) in education, yet they are the minority. The majority consists of great people just getting on with doing great things - more often than not with people, not data, at the heart of their practice. This book inspires such people to find and use their voice; and when tiny voices talk to tiny voices, everyone wins. Suitable for teachers, teaching assistants and school leaders in all phases.

Growing up in the Tennessee hills, Alvin York was equally renowned as a marksman and as a hard-drinking brawler. A dramatic New Year's conversion convinced him that killing was against God's will, and yet this shy, big-boned mountaineer single-handedly dispatched two dozen Germans and captured 132 in the closing days of World War I. He earned the Medal of Honor and a ticker tape parade but refused to cash in on his fame, insisting "Uncle Sam's uniform ain't for sale."
This succinct and gripping new account of Sgt. York's remarkable life includes details from exclusive interviews with the sergeant's three surviving children and information drawn from battlefield eyewitness reports and original film studio archives: fresh reminders of the legacy of one of America's great Christian patriots.
We learn about life through the lives of others. Their experiences, their trials, their adventures become our schools, our chapels, our playgrounds. Christian Encounters, a series of biographies from Thomas Nelson Publishers, highlights important lives from all ages and areas of the Church through prose as accessible and concise as it is personal and engaging. Some are familiar faces. Others are unexpected guests. Whether the person is D.L. Moody, Sergeant York, Saint Nicholas, John Bunyan, or William F. Buckley, we are now living in the world that they created and understand both it and ourselves better in the light of their lives. Their relationships, struggles, prayers, and desires uniquely illuminate our shared experience.

The Grammar of Self - Collected...

    George Watt

In THE GRAMMAR OF SELF, George Watt presents a lifetime of memories, which seemingly move at random from decade to decade, from continent to continent, from cosmos to microcosm. It does have one central goal: to look at poetry as an attempt towards objectification of aspects of personal identity, as a means through which the self may be confronted, challenged and celebrated. But the volume of verse does more than that as it subscribes to a notion from Thomas Szasz about the self: it is “not something that one finds. It is something that one creates.” (T.S. Szasz, The Second Sin (New York: Anchor Press, 1973, p. 49.) This volume accepts that the poetic text, or multiples thereof, is one means through which a self finds articulation. This articulation is open-ended, chaotic, composed of innumerable experiential fragments that come from deed, time, place and person. The self in this volume is composed of psychic jigsaw pieces (single poems) each of which assert their right to placement, but which will never collate into a perfect picture. This volume of poetry is a collection of many of these pieces, which together present an incomplete movement towards Szaszian self-creation.
