Synopsis

In Fairies Photographed, Arthur Conan Doyle passionately defends the controversial Cottingley fairy photographs. Through essays and public statements, he argues for the authenticity of these images and explores the spiritual implications of otherworldly beings. It's a fascinating glimpse into Doyle's spiritualist beliefs and one of the most curious chapters of his legacy.

Why Did That Happen? - Aristotle...

Why Did That Happen? Aristotle Has Four Answers and None of Them Are Helpful is your brutally sarcastic, surprisingly educational crash course in Aristotelian philosophy—specifically his theory of causality, aka why things happen according to a man who thought everything, including acorns and chairs, had a spiritual destiny.
In this delightfully vicious breakdown of Aristotle’s metaphysics, Sophia Blackwell (author of Kant You Not) drags you through the Four Causes—material, formal, efficient, and final—with all the reverence of a philosopher who’s had enough. Whether it’s trees yearning to be trees, tables having identity crises, or humans trying to find meaning while simultaneously sabotaging themselves, this book dissects Aristotle’s ancient framework with modern sarcasm and a side of existential dread.
    Inside, you’ll get:
A roast of Aristotle’s greatest hits: substance, essence, and metaphysical overkill
Why your coffee mug apparently has purpose and moral character
How causality shows up in nature, ethics, AI, and your inability to commit
A final cause that dares to ask if you have one (spoiler: Aristotle thinks you should)
And a walk through the philosophical ruins of teleology, where purpose and pretension meet
Perfect for philosophy students, intellectual masochists, or anyone who’s ever asked “Why did that happen?” and gotten four wildly overcomplicated answers in response.
This is not your professor’s Aristotle. This is Aristotle, but make it bearable

There is a wide variety of types and genres in these compositions, which are as startling as it is revealing, given the age of the culture involved. In Sumer, nearly a millennium before the Hebrews wrote their Bible, or the Greeks their Iliad and Odyssey, we find a growing body of literature (here and throughout this paper, the term literature is used in the more restricted sense of belles-lettres) that includes such diverse genres as epic tales and myths, hymns and laments - as well as many more "wisdom" compositions, such as maxims, fables, and other didactic compositions.
First, we turn to the epic tales of Sumer, the oldest known examples of heroic poetry. Some twelve epic tales that must have been popular in Sumer can now be fully or partially restored. Based on our evidence, they range in length from over four hundred to less than two hundred lines. Consequently, they should be called "epic tales" rather than "epics" since the latter implies a substantial composition.

From No. 1 bestselling author Toni Maguire comes a new true story of abuse and survival

Gerri was only a young girl when she was first abused by her father. After her mother found out, and believing there was nothing she could do to help her child, nor deal with the stigma attached to it in their small Northern Irish town in the 1960s, she committed suicide.

Gerri and her siblings were split up and placed in different foster homes, all knowing they were unlikely to see each other ever again. Told that her mother had committed a grave sin, Gerri was completely alone and abandoned as she confronted even more horrors from her past.

After years of shame and isolation, she finally met a man who would help her heal the wounds she had been left with. With his love and support, Gerri decided it was time for her story to be told.

Why, Father? is her true and moving story of survival.

    Democracy Under Fire - Donald...

Before Trump even ran for President, his disdain for the rules, procedures, and norms of American democracy and the US Constitution was well-known and led prominent Republicans to repudiate him as "unfit" for the GOP nomination. Given the clear-eyed assessment of candidate Trump, why did the Republican Party nominate him as its presidential candidate in 2016 and then stand by him during the next four years?

Much of the attention paid to Trump's rise to power has focused on his corrosive personality and divisive style of governing. But he alone is not the problem. The vulnerability is much broader and deeper. The ascendance of Trump is the culmination of nearly 250 years of political reforms that gradually ceded party nominations to small cliques of ideologically-motivated party activists, interest groups, and donors.

In Democracy under Fire, Lawrence Jacobs provides a highly engaging history of political reforms since the late-eighteenth century that over time dangerously weakened democracy, widened political inequality as well as racial disparities, and rewarded toxic political polarization. Jacobs's searing indictment of political reformers concludes with recommendations to restrain the unbridled ambition of politicians who thrive on division and instead generate broad citizen engagement with tangible policy making.
