Beschreibung

In the depths of the vast Caribbean ocean, where turquoise waters and hidden mysteries converge, lies a tale of intrigue, adventure, and unbridled ambition. It is in this backdrop of legends and whispers that our story unfolds: "Treasures and Betrayals: In Search of the Isle of Death."   Aboard the majestic English ship, the New Horizon, a bold and diverse crew assembles for a challenge that will alter their destinies forever. Led by the courageous Captain Noel, a man whose passion for adventure is matched only by his determination, the team is resolute in unraveling the secrets of an ancient legend. The lost island, known only in hushed tones as the "Isle of Death," is the enigma they tirelessly pursue.   Alongside Noel, his loyal companions Yanick, Vivian, Leo, and Marlo bring their unique skills and contrasting personalities to the quest. Each carries their own dreams and personal reasons for embarking on this perilous and exhilarating journey. The promise of a legendary treasure, particularly the great emerald rumored to rest at the heart of the island, awakens ambitions and desires that could forge or fracture their unity.   But as in any great story, challenges soon emerge. The ship Devil Soul and its enigmatic Captain Jordan Black stand as formidable obstacles in their pursuit. With a dark past and ruthless cunning, Black and his crew are willing to fight to their last breath to protect their secrets and retain control of the legendary island.   As the journey progresses, treacherous winds and furious storms threaten to divert them from their course and test their resilience. Inevitable confrontations loom on the horizon, and the battle on the tempestuous waters becomes an epic struggle for supremacy and survival.   Yet amidst adversity, life sometimes weaves unexpected alliances. When fate compels the crew of the New Horizon to form an uncertain alliance with old rivals.

In Send Her Back and Other Stories, Munashe Kaseke offers an awfully intimate, fresh telling of the immigrant black woman experience in the United States, equally awash with a myriad of challenges as well as the joys of exploring a new world. With sumptuous candor, her complicated, and often tangled, female Zimbabwean protagonists navigate issues of identity, microaggressions, and sexism in vibrant and indelible settings, and at times a tense US political climate. Yet again, these are not only stories of overcoming, they're also marked by characters who've risen to the top of their professional fields, seized the American dream, and who travel the world in glee. Kaseke peels back on the inner wranglings of characters caught between two worlds be it by stories of dating outside one's culture and race or failing to assimilate upon returning home after spending time abroad. Uncanny. Witty. Gripping. Send Her Back and Other Stories dazzles, leaving you newly awakened to the world we live in.

This book follows straight after the first book; “Paying the Price 1”.
Layla Turnbull, a single mother, lives with her eighteen-year-old daughter, Chloe, in an ordinary semi-detached house in North London. Chloe is taking her final exams soon and she needs a distinction in Maths to get the University place she wants. The best maths tutor in town lives just four doors down on the same street and Layla asks him to be Chloe’s tutor, but unfortunately, there's a price to pay. The tutor, Master Matchek, comes from Czechoslovakia and has an unusual system that includes spanking the students when they make mistakes or break any of his rules. Not only that, the tutor believes that the mothers are also at fault so he insists that they present themselves for the same punishment later on the same day.
Layla agrees to the price she has to pay to make sure her daughter gets the distinction she requires. While doing the extra lessons Chloe meets Mary, another student in the class and they become firm friends, with benefits. Mary’s mother and Layla also get together and this book is about their relationships.
Chloe had been late for her last lesson so her mother, Layla, had to receive the same punishment later on the same day, only the parent’s punishment was doubled. Layla had been in the Mall with her friend June that evening when she learnt that Chloe had been punished so she asked June to drop her off for her punishment on the way home.

The strange, the sublime, and the monstrous confront one another with astonishing consequences in this collection of twenty-two stories from award-winning writer E. Lily Yu.

In the village of Yiwei, a fallen wasp nest unfurls into a beautifully accurate map. In a field in Louisiana, birdwatchers forge an indelible connection over a shared glimpse of a Vermilion Flycatcher, and fall. In Nineveh, a judge who prides himself on impartiality finds himself questioned by a mysterious god. On a nameless shore, a small monster searches for refuge and finds unexpected courage.

At turns bittersweet and boundary-breaking, poignant and profound, these twenty-two stories sing, as the oldest fables do, of what it means to be alive in this strange, terrible, beautiful world. For readers who loved the intelligence and compassion in Kim Fu's Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century and the dreamlike prose of Kelly Link's Magic for Beginners, this collection introduces the short fiction of E. Lily Yu, winner of the Astounding Award for Best New Writer and author of the Washington Book Award–winning novel On Fragile Waves, praised by the New York Times Book Review as "devastating and perfect."

In this new collection of short stories, author Michael Elcock explores a variety of inner worlds and lived experiences: survival and betrayal in Germany after World War II ... life in the Scottish highlands ... trouble with army ants ...
ADVANCE PRAISE FOR TRANSACTIONS WITH THE FALLEN
"Michael Elcock's stories enchant, disturb and remind us of the many worlds we inhabit. Touching on intimate moments and interactions, not a lot happens in these intertwined tales, and that is precisely their strength. A young man sits with an older woman one evening and learns about love. A soldier coaxes music out of a battered piano in an attempt to stay alive. Transactions with the Fallen is a study of human relationships told with an exacting eye for detail and the resonant moment." ---Eve Joseph, Griffin Poetry Prize Winner, 2019
"There's a lot to be learned from other people's childhoods---and from other people's adulthoods too, if they've been lucky enough to have one. When they're luckier still, there's a lot to be learned from other people's imaginations. In this remarkable book of stories, Michael Elcock offers us the fruits of all three: a rich, multifaceted childhood, a robust, thoughtful adulthood, and a lively, athletic imagination." ---Robert Bringhurst, author, poet, and recipient of the British Columbia Lieutenant Governor's Award for Literary Excellence

A child waits for the tooth fairy; a mother spends a night watching a recording of the previous night; two women face the ghosts that haunted their grandmothers. The nights in these ten stories are thick and substantial, ambiguous and alluring.

Eerie, magical, hushed and surprisingly alive, this anthology shows the night as a place where connections are made and daylit lives can be changed.
