Beschreibung

This book is a compilation of various writings from seminars conducted by Admiral TNI (ret.) Rosihan Arsyad, which discussed various maritime problems in Indonesia, especially the South China Sea issue.

Historically, Indonesia wielded significant influence in Southeast Asia. This was made possible by the formidable maritime forces of the Sriwijaya Kingdom in the 7th century and the Majapahit Kingdom in the 12th century. During their peak, these two kingdoms were able to assert their sovereignty, power, and influence over a vast region that encompassed an area even larger than present-day Indonesia.

Several issues are simmering in the South China Sea, potentially making it another hotspot in Asia, alongside North Korea's nuclear program and the contentious relations between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Taiwan. The South China Sea, a highly strategic maritime area, frequently attracts the attention of major powers vying for control. Lingering overlapping territorial claims further compound the situation, often posing threats to the peace and stability of the region.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) established in 1982 provides clear guidelines for determining a nation's maritime boundaries. However, the introduction of the new concepts of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Continental Shelf has made it increasingly challenging and complex to accurately define these boundaries, leading to potential ambiguity. This complexity allows for the possibility of multiple interpretations of each country's EEZ and Continental Shelf boundaries.

Two primary issues dominate the South China Sea. Firstly, the issue of overlapping sovereignty claims arose following China's assertion of significant control over the region, claiming it as part of its sovereign territory. Secondly, concerns revolve around maritime security in the South China Sea. One potential scenario involves the disruption of marine traffic, which could escalate into armed conflict due to the overlapping claims. Additionally, there are latent threats to lower-level maritime security in the region.

Why did Thomas Jefferson write that he would be happy if all dogs went extinct? What economic opportunity did attorney John Lord Hayes envision for the newly emancipated during Reconstruction? What American workers were mocked by Theodore Roosevelt as "morose, melancholy men"? What problems with revenue collection did Congressman James Beauchamp Clark mention when proposing an income tax? Why did Harley O. Gable of Armour & Company recommend that his meat-packing business manufacture violin strings?

The answers to all these questions involve sheep. From the colonial era through the mid-twentieth century, America's flocks played a key role in the nation's development. Furthermore, much consternation centered around the sheep the United States lacked, so that dependency on foreign wool became a full-blown crisis in wartime. But more than just providers of wool, sheep were valued for their meat, for their byproducts after slaughter, and even for their efficiency at lawn maintenance.

Brett Bannor explains how sheep have impacted the broader growth and development of the United States. The history of America's sheep encompasses topics that touch on many cornerstones of the American experience, such as enslavement, warfare, western expansion, industrialization, taxation, feminism, conservation, and labor relations, among others.

This collection of essays from rhetoric authority and celebrated writing blogger David Murray applies his signature blend of humor and heart to a free-wheeling conversation about how we communicate in America.
An insightful book packed with wonderful writing, practical advice, and hope for a better, kinder future. —Jonathan Eig, author of King: A Life
You're ready to give up. Throw up your hands and walk out the door. You don't know what else to say—to some dear family and close friends, let alone the crazy strangers that seem to populate half the country. You're ready to read An Effort to Understand.
But don't worry. This is not a book about civility.
Instead, David Murray (blogger, speechwriter, rhetoric authority, and professional curmudgeon) is urging readers to join him in a near-spiritual movement, one that pushes us to consider communication as more than a means of persuading others to our way of thinking, but as a way of thinking all its own.
With his signature blend of wit, warmth, and four-letter words, Murray's essays tackle subjects from the specter of cancel culture and the responsibilities of citizenship to the art of dealing with annoying neighbors and the challenges of talking to kids about injustice. His words show that the personal and political gulfs between us are small compared to our common desire to connect.
It may be a last-ditch effort, but Americans have a chance at trust, peace, and solidarity if we make an effort to speak more honestly and listen to understand.
Because when it comes to communication, we're all the bad guys. Thankfully, we have a chance to be the good guys too.
