The Ugly Swans by brothers Strugatsky is the most prophetic and profound book which predicted the transformation of humanity we observe now. The humanity mutates into something new. The action takes place in an uncertain mildly-authoritarian country, in an unnamed town. Famous writer Victor Banev comes from the capital to the town of his childhood where the rain never stops. Banev finds himself in the middle of strange events linked to "slimies" or "four-eyes" - strange people suffering from disfiguring "yellow leprosy" manifesting itself as yellow circles around the eyes. These slimies live in a separate colony. The town's adult population is terrified by their existence, considering them to be the cause of all the bad and odd things in the town. Nevertheless, the town's teenagers simply adore slimies, that including Banev's daughter Irma... Science fiction readers weary of the repetitive taste of American SF shoud discover books like the Ugly Swans with appreciation and pleasure. Highly recommended!

African-American folklore was Zora Neale Hurston's first love. Collected in the late 1920's Every Tongue Got to Confess, from the celebrated author of Their Eyes Were Watching God, is published here for the first time, beautifully performed by Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis.
Hilarious, bittersweet, and often saucy, these folk-tales provide a verdant slice of African-American life in the rural South at the turn of the twentieth century. They capture the heart and soul of the vital, independent, and creative community that so inspired Zora Neale Hurston.
In Every Tongue Got to Confess, Hurston records, with uncanny precision, the voices of ordinary people -and no two actors better capture this world than Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. They pay tribute to the richness of Black vernacular -- its crisp self-awareness, singular wit, and improvisational wordplay. These folk-tales reflect the joys and sorrows of the African-American experience, celebrate the redemptive power of storytelling, and showcase the continuous presence in America of an Afticanized language that flourishes to this day.Performed by Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis

"The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe is a story inspired by true events that took place on Castle Island, a former military fort near Boston Harbor in the state of Massachusetts. When Poe was stationed there as a young cadet in the army, he discovered a peculiar tomb. After some investigation, he learned about a man who had been walled up alive. Forbidden by his commanding officer to ever repeat the details, Poe took the thread of the story, changed the setting and characters, and wrote this tale.
The action takes place in Italy during carnival. The narrator, Montresor, without giving details, explains that he bears a grudge against Fortunato, who has insulted him. Both men are wine connoisseurs, and Montresor lures Fortunato into his catacombs, promising him a bottle of fine Amontillado wine.

Bloody Nick returns from the Mediterranean tired—he has done too much, seen too much, and needs rest at home. His ship, HBMS Hawke, needs time in the yard. A year of half-pay leaves Nick rested and anxious to get back to sea. He is close to the top of the Captain's List and automatic promotion to Rear Admiral must be due in two to four years—the actual date varying at the Admiralty's convenience. Captains sitting at home without a command are more likely to be yellowed, made without squadron, and never employed again.Nick has his baronetcy—which he values greatly—but knows a successful command as an admiral may turn that into an Irish peerage. He cannot realistically hope for more than that, a title without a seat in the House of Lords, but would dearly love to become Lord Turnhouse. He begs the First Lord for a ship and is given Saturn, an unusual razee, to take out to the Mediterranean . . . provided he can man her.His first task in the Mediterranean is to attempt to tidy up a problem in the Aegean where the French are taking bases on some of the islands, the Ottomans are losing control of others to rebel Turks and unruly Greeks, and the British are enemies to some, friends to others, and allies to none. As Commodore with a small squadron, Nick has a free hand to create peace—quite possibly the peace of the grave.
From a futuristic colony where a woman dreams of rockets, to a drab estate where a girl finds magic, SJ Bradley\'s inventive and experimental stories showcase remarkable range. Vividly rendered, they illuminate quiet despairs and heroisms pulsing through seemingly ordinary lives - councilmen, dance moms, dreaming teenagers. With empathy and lyrical prose, Bradley transports readers into psychologically rich neighborhoods where reinvention flickers amid life's constricting boundaries. Gritty yet tender, Maps of Imaginary Towns interrogates grief, ambition, belonging, and traces the hard-won solace of small acts of courage.
