Summary

Unlu Yunan filozofu Aristoteles'in yok oldugu sanilan "Atinalilarin Devleti" adli yazisi, Misir'dan Londra'daki British Museum'a getirilmis olan bir papirus elyazmasinin ortaya cikartilmasiyla 1891 yili Subat ayinda yeniden tanindi. Elyazmasinin ilk okuyucusu ve ortaya cikaricisi F. G. Kenyon'dur. Aristoteles'in eseri, on yuzu Isa'nin dogumundan sonraki 78-79 yiliyla ilgili hesaplarla dolu dort papirusun arka yuzune yazilmistir. Fakat bunun Aristoteles'in Atina devleti uzerine yazmis oldugu yazi oldugundan suphe etmemize bir neden yoktur. Cunku Aristoteles'ten sonraki birtakim eskicag adamlarinin yazilarindaki gondermelerle Aristoteles'in eserinden bugune kalmis olan parcalari bu papiruste buluyoruz. Aristoteles sekiz kitaba ayrilan "Devlet Bilgisi" adli eserine temel olmak uzere daha once 158 tane baska baska devlet bicimini yazip toplamisti. Bunlar arasinda "Atinalilarin Devleti" herhalde en buyugu olacak: Atina'nin uzun zamandan beri Hellas'in bas devleti olmasi, Aristoteles'in hayatinin yarisindan cogunu Atina'da gecirmis bulunmasi bunu gerektirir. Kitapta anlatilan ve kitapta bulunmayan olaylara bakarak Aristoteles'in bu eserini Isa'nin dogumundan onceki 329 yiliyla 325 yili arasinda yazmis oldugu soylenebilir. Demek oluyor ki kitap Aristoteles'in son yillarinin urunudur. "Atinalilarin Devleti" biri tarihsel (bolum 1 - 41), oteki sistematik (bolum 42 - 69) iki anakesimden kuruluyor. Birinci anakesimde su dort basdilim vardir: 1-12. bolumler monarkhiadan oligarkhiaya gecisi, Drakon'la Solon'un karisik olan durumu duzeltmeye calismalarini anlatiyor; 13-19. bolumlerde tyrannoslugun gelismesi ve devrilmesi gosteriliyor; 20-28. bolumlerde demokratianin nasil gelistigini, en yuksek basamaga nasil tirmandigini goruyoruz; 29-40. bolumlerde oligarkhik degisikliklerle bunlara karsi yapilan tepkilerden uzun uzun soz aciliyor ve sonunda 41. bolumde de bastan baslanarak butun degisiklikler kisaca yeniden aniliyor. Ikinci anakesim dort basdilimde sirayla sunlari anlatiyor: Yurttaslik hakki (bol. 42), Besyuzler ve halk meclislerinin duzenleri, yetkileri ve isleri (43-46). Memurlarin devleti yonetmeleri (47-62) ve mahkemeler (63-69). Aristoteles, eserini Isa'nin dogumundan onceki dorduncu yuzyildaki Yunanlilar icin yazdigindan o zaman herkesce bilinen, fakat bugunku okuyucularin okuduklarini iyice anlayabilmeleri icin eski Yunan tarihiyle ugrasmalarini gerektiren birtakim seyleri anlatmistir.

It would be four long years before his mother, father, and sister gained legal passage to America. But while the boy would never have chosen such circumstance, it's the man who can look back and say he would not have changed it.
In Obstacles Welcome, de la Vega recounts his journey as a young Cuban immigrant to president and CEO of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, a subsidiary of AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T). A frontliner in the converging worlds of technology and communications, de la Vega takes readers behind the scenes of the Internet revolution, shares insights from the nation's top technology companies, and chronicles the incredible obstacles intrinsic to successfully merging the largest wireless operations in U.S. history.
Obstacles Welcome is an innovation manifesto for those committed to bigger thinking and greater results both professionally and personally. The golden age of polar exploration of the Northern and Southern continents did not reach its zenith until the turn of the 20th century, and national rivalries abounded between the major seafaring nations of the world. Where past explorers made glancing journeys to Antarctica, the superior technology of the coal engine, various new survival materials, and even the motorcar opened new possibilities for more daring treks. Backed by governments, banking organizations, and great newspapers, a small group of restless adventurers assaulted the polar continents with the intent of reaching and marking the exact locations of Earth’s northern and southernmost points.
More than any other country, Britain staked its national pride on being the first to reach the poles. Britain made its first and finest statement for actually reaching the South Pole in the first years of the 20th century, even as the dangers of the Antarctic, including scurvy, dehydration, and hypothermia, were well known to all major explorers. They also understood that even the most incidental detail of an expedition going amiss could spell doom for all parties involved. The era was universally dubbed the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, and some of the explorers who were involved became household names around the world, including British explorer Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton and Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. However, one name above all others has become associated with this period: Robert Falcon Scott. Widely referred to as “Scott of the Antarctic,” Captain Scott became an icon of tenacity in the face of incredible adversity, and his final expedition to the South Pole lives on as an example of the nobility of the human spirit, even in the face of utter disaster. A monument to Scott’s persistence still stands at Observation Point, inscribed with the last line of Tennyson’s “Ulysses”: “To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”

In this hilarious and inspirational memoir, Ross Mathews -- best known as "Ross the Intern" from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno -- chronicles his life growing up as an atypical kid in a small Northwestern farm town to living as an atypical adult in Los Angeles, to eventually being his loud, proud, apologetically genuine self on national television. As a young kid growing up in a farm town, Ross Mathews might as well have wished for a pet unicorn or a calorie-free cookie tree to grow in his front yard. Either of those far-fetched fantasies would have been more likely to come true than his real dream: working in television in Hollywood, California. Seriously, that stuff just doesn't happen to people like Ross. But guess what? It totally did. Now, with his first book, Ross takes us inside his journey as a super-fan, revealing the most embarrassing and hilarious moments of his small-town life and big-city adventures. From learning to swear like a hardened trucker to that time in high school when had to face down the most frightening opponent of all (his girlfriend's lady bits), Ross holds nothing back. Oh, then there's his surprisingly shady past involving the cutest pair of plus-sized women's pajama bottoms, deliciously dangerous pot butter, and embezzled sandwiches. And, of course, how he's managed to turn an obsession with pop-culture into one-on-one interactions with celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Tiffani-Amber Theissen, Madonna, Michelle Kwan, and countless more without ever having a single restraining order issued against him. Infused with Ross's trademark humor, unique voice, and total honesty, Man Up! is a mission statement for anyone who doesn't fit the mold. His hasn't been the most traditional way to build a career in Hollywood, but Ross has somehow managed to make his mark without ever compromising who he is. He is as serious about this as he is about Golden Girls trivia: You don't need to change who you are to achieve your dreams (although there's nothing wrong with a makeover every now and then). You just need to Man Up!

An examination of the barriers facing Indigenous people within the healthcare system from the perspective of an empathetic settler physician
After leaving her medical practice in Pennsylvania in 2011, Jarol Boan returned to her childhood home in Saskatchewan, Canada to practice medicine. There she found a healthcare system struggling with preventable chronic diseases and institutional racism. Shocked by the high rate of preventable diseases in her patients, Boan realized that a paternalistic deficit model does not support Indigenous communities. Through working to provide medical services in Indigenous communities and learning firsthand from her Indigenous patients, Boan embarked on a road to enlightenment and reconciliation.
In The Medicine Chest, Boan exposes the healthcare disparities in a country that prides itself on an equitable healthcare system and examines the devastating effects of diabetes, the myth of “the drunken Indian,” the inner workings of hospitals, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, epidemics on reserves, and residential school trauma. Exploring the intersectionality of common diseases and social determinants of health gained from her experience of caring for Indigenous patients, Boan weaves historical data, comments on health policy, and jurisdictional gaps into the narrative while investigating how Canada’s healthcare system is failing those most in need.
