Synopsis

In The Knights, the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes delivers a biting political satire targeting the demagogue Cleon, one of the most powerful figures in Athenian politics. Written during the Peloponnesian War, the play follows a group of slaves who conspire to overthrow a corrupt and blustery war profiteer—a transparent stand-in for Cleon—who has gained control over the city-state and manipulates the people for personal gain.
