  At the beginning of the twentieth century, two British inventors, Arthur Pollen and Harold Isherwood, became fascinated by a major military question: how to aim the big guns of battleships. These warships—of enormous geopolitical import before the advent of intercontinental missiles or drones—had to shoot in poor light and choppy seas at distant moving targets, conditions that impeded accurate gunfire. Seeing the need to account for a plethora of variables, Pollen and Isherwood built an integrated system for gathering data, calculating predictions, and transmitting the results to the gunners. At the heart of their invention was the most advanced analog computer of the day, a technological breakthrough that anticipated the famous Norden bombsight of World War II, the inertial guidance systems of nuclear missiles, and the networked “smart” systems that dominate combat today. Recognizing the value of Pollen and Isherwood’s invention, the British Royal Navy and the United States Navy pirated it, one after the other.   Every year, on a weekend before Christmas, the small Caribbean island of Carriacou, Grenada, holds its annual Parang Festival, featuring concerts, performances of local quadrille dance, Hosannah band (a cappella singing) competitions, and the climactic string band competition. Born in the years leading up to Grenada's 1979 Socialist Revolution, the Parang Festival today offers a vehicle for Carriacouans to articulate and assert a progressive understanding of local cultural identity as well as a regional, pan-Caribbean belonging. Rebecca S. Miller examines the varying impact that factors such as cultural ambivalence, globalization, and technology have had on the performance of Carriacou's folk and traditional music and dance forms. Using archival sources and current ethnography, she illuminates the enduring significance of the Parang Festival to illustrate the social and political history of Carriacou as well as this culture's contemporary process of modernization. Thus, Dowe asserts that Black women's political ambition often manifests outside formal politics, in activism and community building, a process that is linked to a wider radical vision for a full democracy. This is ambition that occurs in a specific context of marginalization, and both motivation and the conditions surrounding such motivation are critical to understanding the full range of Black women's political work. By focusing on Black women's experiences in elite politics, The Radical Imagination of Black Women is a much-needed intervention in the literature on electoral ambition, women in politics, and candidates and elections.

  Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish polar explorer whose remarkable journeys cemented his place among the most important figures of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Shackleton's story is one of daring, leadership, and resilience, traits that made him a legendary figure in the annals of exploration. 
  Born in Kilkea, County Kildare, Ireland, on February 15, 1874, Shackleton moved to Sydenham, south London, at the age of ten with his Anglo-Irish family. His early life was marked by a sense of adventure that would shape his future endeavors. Shackleton's first significant exposure to the polar regions came in 1901 when he joined Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery expedition as a third officer. Although Shackleton’s time on the expedition was cut short due to health concerns, he had already proven his determination by marching to a new southern record of latitude 82°S, alongside Scott and Edward Adrian Wilson. Despite being sent home early, Shackleton had tasted the allure of the polar regions and was eager for more. 
  The opportunity came in 1907 when Shackleton led the Nimrod expedition to Antarctica. During this journey, he and three companions ventured farther south than any explorer before them, reaching 88°S, just 97 geographical miles from the South Pole. This achievement was monumental, representing the greatest advancement toward the pole at the time. In addition to their groundbreaking southern march, the team also made history by summiting Mount Erebus, Antarctica’s most active volcano. Shackleton returned a hero and was knighted by King Edward VII for his daring exploits.
