Beschreibung

I no longer know how I found you, whether it was during a walk by the sea, or if it was you who wandered the plains seeking the cool shade of my body. I know that a lifetime has passed, that we have been almost everything, although we continue to be almost nothing. Friendship, love, and longing are part of our essence. I have already held your hand, listened to you attentively, idolized you as a goddess, and even dared to kiss your lips.

We are like the sea, I the wave that comes and goes, you the mermaid who hides in the deep refuge of solitude and appears on the bow of my ship from time to time.

This silence that happens after the thunder is pure meditation, an act of contrition that leads us to balance the euphoria with the calm of being just people, as ordinary as everyone else, almost as complex as many.

And here I am, after so many years, once again a tsunami, rising above the broken waves of the sea to bring you to the surface and to kiss your lips once more.

Poetry is the language of Catholicism. From the songs of Scripture to the hymns of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Church has always used metaphor and image, meter and rhyme, and the music of language to illuminate and inculcate the faith.  Yet, when it comes to Catholic poetry itself, the song too often remains unsung. Many devout believers recoil from poetry, even when it is deeply Catholic. Many poetry lovers overlook Catholic poetry, even when it is truly great. And passionate readers are left with few resources from which to draw inspiration—even as the number of great Catholic poems continues to grow. This groundbreaking collection is designed to change that. Edited by acclaimed poet and author Sally Read, it includes a carefully curated collection of poetry with brief essays to introduce each selection; a detailed introduction and glossary of poetic terms; and a wide range of poetic voices—from giants like Dante and Shakespeare, to mystical saints like Hildegard of Bingen and John of the Cross, to modern masters like Gerard Manley Hopkins and Oscar Wilde, to contemporary female poets like Denise Levertov and Anne Porter. What emerges is truly universal: an unparalleled collection spanning twenty countries and twenty centuries. Whether Catholic or non-Catholic, a poetry skeptic or a poetry lover, readers will glean from these pages a deepened appreciation of the history of poetry, the life of the Church, and the powerful ways in which each strengthens the other.

William Blake’s volume of poetry entitled Songs of Innocence and Experience is the embodiment of his belief that innocence and experience were “the two contrary states of the human soul,” and that true innocence was impossible without experience. Songs of Innocence contains poems either written from the perspective of children or written about them. Many of the poems appearing in Songs of Innocence have a counterpart in Songs of Experience, with quite a different perspective of the world. The disastrous end of the French Revolution caused Blake to lose faith in the goodness of mankind, explaining much of the despair found in Songs of Experience. Blake also believed that children lost their innocence through exploitation and from a religious community which put dogma before mercy. He did not, however, believe that children should be kept from becoming experienced entirely. In truth, he believed that children should indeed become experienced but through their own discoveries, which is reflected in a number of these poems.
