Synopsis

A detailed, illustrated history of UK locomotives exported across Europe, with over 200 previously unpublished photos.

Many British main-line diesel and electric locomotives have found further useful employment across Europe after completion of their careers in the United Kingdom. This volume incorporates text and photos into a detailed history of these locomotives and their surprisingly extensive geographical use—including in France, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Kosovo, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia in recent decades.

A significant amount of exclusive factual information and over 200 previously unpublished photographs combine to provide a comprehensive insight into the British locomotives now finding a second life overseas, including coverage of Class 37, 56, and 58 locomotives on high-speed line construction work in France; Class 37 mishaps in Spain; Class 86s on their day of arrival in Bulgaria; and various types of a.c. electric locomotives in their new habitats across Eastern Europe.

From Massachusetts to Florida to Washington to California, 50 Great American Places takes you on a journey through our nation's history. Sharing the inside stories of sites as old as Mesa Verde (Colorado) and Cahokia (Illinois) and as recent as Silicon Valley (California) and the Mall of America (Minnesota), each essay provides the historical context for places that represent fundamental American themes: the compelling story of democracy and self-government; the dramatic impact of military conflict; the powerful role of innovation and enterprise; the inspiring achievements of diverse cultural traditions; and the defining influence of the land and its resources.Sites you would expect-in Boston, New York, and Washington, DC-are here, as well as plenty of surprises, such as the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, or Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, or the Village Green in Hudson, Ohio; less obvious places that, together with the more well-known destinations, collectively tell the story of America. For families who want to take a trip that is both educational and entertaining, for history enthusiasts, or anyone curious about our country's greatest places, this book is the perfect guide.

Reg Batten was a railway and transport photographer, who started taking pictures in the early 1930s, mostly on the Great Northern and Great Eastern sections of the L N E R. He later started taking pictures elsewhere on the railway network, covering other companies, also looking at other forms of transport like traffic on the river Thames. This is the first book of Reg Batten's work, covering his railway photography from the early 1930s, through wartime into the 1950s, and steam on into the preservation era. This volume not only covers locomotive types but also looks at locations and interesting features of the railway scene at that time.
