The true story of an Alaska Native village destroyed by flooding and erosion caused by climate change—and how they fought for help.

Warming Arctic temperatures have been making coastal areas of Alaska increasingly uninhabitable. In 2008, the small Alaska Native village of Kivalina filed a legal claim against some of the world’s largest fossil fuel companies for damaging their homeland and creating a false debate around climate change. Academic and former journalist Christine Shearer explores the history leading up to the lawsuit, its connections to disaster management and adaptation, and its relationship to past misinformation campaigns involving lead, asbestos, and tobacco. Kivalina’s struggle for safe relocation, the book argues, is part of our common struggle to acknowledge and address climate change before it is too late.

2012 Rachel Carson Environment Book Award (Honorable Mention)

    Praise for Kivalina

“Moving, infuriating, ominous . . . . Shearer provides an impressively concise and comprehensive history of the growth of corporate power in America; its influence on, entwinement with, and corruption of government; [and] corporate obfuscation of industrial hazards.” —Publisher’s Weekly

“Best book of 2011: one of the most timely and important books to be published in 2011—and in the past decade.” —Jeff Biggers, The Huffington Post

“In novelistic detail, Shearer recounts the science, politics, legal battles, and human experience at one of the leading edges of climate change impact. In doing so, she . . . tells the story not just of one village in Alaska, but of us all.” —The Society of Environmental Journalists

Whole Self - A Concise History...

Kendrick Mercer's Whole Self tells the story of the birth, evolution, and history of human consciousness and its impact on the human psyche. Human consciousness is the most powerful unfolding force on the Earth with the potential either to lead us to annihilate ourselves by generating conflict or to work together wisely and in common purpose. Deep inside of everybody living today is an elemental state of being, Whole Self, which is the natural, instinctive, intuitive state of being that has been chiseled and honed in our biology over billions of years of evolutionary life experience as it was handed down from ancestor to ancestor, generation by generation, in an unbroken chain. Following a prehistoric disaster, our Cro-Magnon ancestors adapted the capacity for abstract reasoning. Unfortunately, this Shift in cognitive ability had a major drawback: It introduced fear into our minds, along with the response to fear, control; two issues we've had to contend with ever since, which are major sources of human suffering. Our generation with its advanced understanding of the brain has a great evolutionary opportunity on its hands to find ways to combine the best of post-Shift reasoning with our reawakened capacity for spontaneous and joyful life lived in harmony with nature and all living beings on our planet. In reawakening to Whole Self as individuals, we gain: The return to the normal and natural state of being: tranquility. The ability to perceive the unspun truth of each moment. The capacity to come from the state of tranquility and respond spontaneously and appropriately, with minimal effort, to the truth of each moment.
Collectively, we gain a path to peace, prosperity, and better mental and emotional health. At the present stage in the evolution of human consciousness, consciousness itself has clouded and shadowed the incredible power and benefits of Whole Self, creating stress, fear, and insecurity within the entire human population. Nonetheless, Whole Self lies latent in the DNA of each human being, where it is always ready to awaken an elemental state of tranquility and power. The reawakening of Whole Self is appropriate and necessary for the continuing survival of humans, and possibly all life on Earth. As we reawaken to the implicit gifts of Whole Self, these gifts will automatically merge with the powerful force of our human consciousness to create wisdom and help us solve the dire issues we currently face, such as overcrowding, shortages of resources like food and water, violence, poverty, and climate change.

    Forex Trading The ultimate guide...

The foreign exchange market, or Forex market, is a fast-paced and exciting market. Until recently, this kind of trading was only done by central banks, corporations, financial institutions, and wealthy individuals. But thanks to the emergence of the internet, many more people can join the market and use it to do investing as well.
Daily currency fluctuations are going to be small. Most pairs of currencies are only going to move about a cent each day, which will represent a change that is less than 1 percent in the value of the currency. This means that in most cases, the Forex market is going to be one of the least volatile financial markets around. Therefore, many currency speculators are going to rely on enormous amounts of leverage to increase how valuable a potential movement can be. In fact, with the Forex market, the leverage can be as high as 250:1.
This leverage is really high and can be really risky. But because of the deep amount of liquidity and the fact that the Forex market is available to be traded around the clock, many brokers can make high leverage the standard of the industry which can make the movements more meaningful for most currency traders.
Extreme liquidity and the high leverage of this market has really helped to push rapid growth in the market, making it a great place for investing with many traders. Positions on this market can be opened, and then closed again, within minutes, or the trader can choose to hold onto the position for months. Currency prices are going to be based on the idea of supply and demand or that currency pair at the time, and it is hard to manipulate them easily, simply because the size of the market is just so big. Even central banks and other large players in the market are not able to make changes that will move the prices of currency pairs as well.
While many of the players in the Forex market are going to be larger players like banks and financial institutions, there are still opportunities for investors to get in. However, for the individual to do well, they need to know some of the basics of any movements in the currency, or they are going to run into trouble and will lose more money than they can gain on this market.
