In the illustrated edition of William Le Queux's comprehensive collection, "100+ Mystery & Espionage Thrillers," readers are invited into a labyrinth of intrigue and suspense that defined early 20th-century literature. Le Queux, a pioneer of the spy thriller genre, crafts narratives that intricately weave elements of mystery and political tension, reflecting the socio-political climate of his time. His literary style is characterized by vivid descriptions and a fast-paced narrative that pulls readers into meticulously constructed plots teeming with deception, adventure, and the shadows of espionage that loom over Europe during an era of uncertainty. William Le Queux was not merely a novelist; he was a journalist and a fervent commentator on contemporary issues, particularly those surrounding national security and societal threats. His diverse experiences, including travel across Europe and a keen interest in the political landscape, informed his work, allowing him to address the anxieties of an age marked by espionage and espionage fears. Le Queux's writings echo the zeitgeist of a pre-World War I world, where intrigue permeated daily life and literature was a reflection of burgeoning nationalistic sentiments. The Field Bazaar is a short story by Arthur Conan Doyle, first published on November 20, 1896 in a special "Bazaar Number" of The Student, a publication of the students' representative council at Edinburgh University. It is a Sherlock Holmes story, published under Conan Doyle's byline and featuring both Holmes and his partner, Dr. John Watson. It is, however, treated by most experts as a parody or pastiche not suitable for inclusion in the traditional 60-story canon of Sherlock Holmes, though there are dissenters.Watson narrates "The Field Bazaar"—which mirrors the reality of Conan Doyle's gift of the story to The Student—from a first-person perspective. The story opens with Holmes and Watson at breakfast in the sitting-room of their residence at 221B Baker Street. Holmes infers from a handful of clues that an envelope Watson is holding contains an invitation to "help in the Edinburgh University Bazaar." He then concludes, to Watson's astonishment, "that the particular help which you have been asked to give was that you should write in their album, and that you have already made up your mind that the present incident will be the subject of your article." Holmes then returns to reading his morning newspaper.

Schlock horror director Landis Woodley lives in a decaying mansion in the Hollywood Hills. When he abandoned the movie business—after being reduced to filming skin flicks and peep shows—he also left a laundry list of enemies, including the IRS. But avid fan Clint Stockbern is determined to write a piece on the alcoholic recluse for Monster magazine. Woodley agrees to the interview—for $600 in cash.

As the tape recorder starts rolling, Stockbern travels back in time with Woodley. He hears recollections of Attack of the Haunted Saucer, the worst movie of all time, and Blood Ghouls of Malibu. But he really wants to know about Woodley's masterpiece, Cadaver. Shot on location in the Los Angeles County morgue, the film was rumored to have used real corpses and everyone associated with the production has been fatally haunted since its 1957 release. But the truth is far more terrifying than Stockbern imagined. Is a dead Satanist, possessed by the devil, reaching out beyond the grave? Or is the reporter the final victim in a diabolical scheme dreamed up by mortals?

Horror Show is a wild and wacky romp that sends up mid-century Hollywood horror movies and schlockmeisters Roger Corman, William Castle, and Ed Wood.
