  'The Border Line' is unusual in that Lawrence dabbles in the supernatural (as he was to do again in 'The Rocking-Horse Winner' two years later) and that this is less a story in the traditional sense and more an exploration of the mind of a particular woman, based on his own wife, Frieda. Katherine, in the story, realises that her real love was her first husband whom she should, according to Lawrence, have submitted to to gain real happiness. As Lawrence says in the story, thinking of his German wife perhaps, 'Beyond all race is the problem of man and woman'.

  Master Matchek is a Czechoslovakian maths teacher in his mid-fifties who has two great passions. He loves maths and he loves spanking women's bottoms, both young and old. He has a reputation for getting his girls very high marks in their final exams but his reputation for spanking girls who do not do their homework or wear the wrong clothes for his extra lessons is also well known. In this book, Susan Benting enrols her daughter Pauline on the course but omits to tell Master Matchek that she has a husband so she gets spanked twice before the course begins. Phillip Benting learns that spanking his wife and daughter can be very effective.

  On a cool crisp night in the Epping Forest, a stagecoach was moving amongst the shadows of a full silver moon. He was seeing highwaymen and footpads in every shadow. The driver was also very nervous as highwaymen were known to work within these woods. Suddenly a handsome well dressed man carrying a brace of gleaming duelling pistols appeared, He was riding a white horse and had come out of the shadows into the moonlight. The nervous driver sped up the coach. The horseman was following the coach but at a faster pace, shouting "Stop now or I'll shoot!" "Stand and deliver, your money or your life!" shouted the highwayman Firing his pistol he winged the driver who knowing the next shot might kill him slowed the coach to a stop.
