  'The Border Line' is unusual in that Lawrence dabbles in the supernatural (as he was to do again in 'The Rocking-Horse Winner' two years later) and that this is less a story in the traditional sense and more an exploration of the mind of a particular woman, based on his own wife, Frieda. Katherine, in the story, realises that her real love was her first husband whom she should, according to Lawrence, have submitted to to gain real happiness. As Lawrence says in the story, thinking of his German wife perhaps, 'Beyond all race is the problem of man and woman'.

In this book, Susan Benting enrols her daughter Pauline on the course but omits to tell Master Matchek that she has a husband so she gets spanked twice before the course begins. Phillip Benting learns that spanking his wife and daughter can be very effective.

The nervous driver sped up the coach. The horseman was following the coach but at a faster pace, shouting "Stop now or I'll shoot!" "Stand and deliver, your money or your life!" shouted the highwayman Firing his pistol he winged the driver who knowing the next shot might kill him slowed the coach to a stop.
