Sinossi

Now ponder well, you parents deare,
These wordes which I shall write;
A doleful story you shall heare,
In time brought forth to light.

A gentleman of good account
In Norfolke dwelt of late.
Who did in honour far surmount
Most men of his estate.

Sore sicke he was, and like to dye,
No helpe his life could save;
His wife by him as sicke did lye,
And both possest one grave.

No love between these two was lost,
Each was to other kinde;
In love they liv'd, in love they dyed,
And left two babes behinde:

The one a fine and pretty boy,
Not passing three yeares olde;
The other a girl more young than he
And fram'd in beautye's molde.

    Doorstep by Keith Laumer - The general was bucking for his other star—and this miserable contraption bucked right back!
    Steadying his elbow on the kitchen table serving as desk, Brigadier General Straut leveled his binoculars and stared out through the second-floor window of the farmhouse at the bulky object lying canted at the edge of the wood lot. He watched the figures moving over and around the gray mass, then flipped the lever on the field telephone at his elbow.
    "How are your boys doing, Major?"
    "General, since that box this morning—"
    "I know all about the box, Bill. So does Washington by now. What have you got that's new?"
    "Sir, I haven't got anything to report yet. I have four crews on it, and she still looks impervious as hell."
    "Still getting the sounds from inside?"
    "Intermittently, General."
    "I'm giving you one more hour, Major. I want that thing cracked."
    The general dropped the phone back on its cradle and peeled the cellophane from a cigar absently. He had moved fast, he reflected, after the State Police notified him at nine forty-one last night. He had his men on the spot, the area evacuated of civilians, and a preliminary report on its way to Washington by midnight. At two thirty-six, they had discovered the four-inch cube lying on the ground fifteen feet from the huge object—missile, capsule, bomb—whatever it was. But now—several hours later—nothing new.
    The field phone jangled. Straut grabbed it up.

    Sandals Or A Suit - Lore For...

    I’m Reid Genauer, singer, songwriter, storyteller. What follows is a collection of children's stories called "Sandals or A Suit" —a collection of whimsical poems that sprung from my adventures as curious kid and later as a dad to three spirited children of my own.
    As a musician in folk rock outfits Strangefolk and Assembly of Dust I’ve spent years cultivating, crafting on occasion cracking the code on a catalogue of songs for some 3 decades. And in the delightful chaos of fatherhood I've found a treasure trove of inspiration of another sort. These poems are not unlike songs, they're lighthearted lore for little folk. Little time capsules of the wonder born of waddling through the mischief of childhood—echoes of the eternal debate of sandals versus a suit to the wincing thrill of yanking a tooth with a length of string tied to a door (true story).
    Each piece is a snapshot of laughter, the expression of imaginings and a chance to balloon into a world where every corner is an adventure waiting like a bullfrog bouncing into boggy soggy great beyond. These are but a few chapters in an endless escapade of stories I made up as bedtime ramblings for my kids. They are a landscape of sorts where whimsy reigns and the spirit of childhood dances afoot for people of all ages, happily ever after.

    Welcoming Committee by Harry Harrison - There were four of them. Four lovely girls with pale green skins, friendly, laughing, chattering away in clear voices.
    Author Harry Harrison is best known for his character The Stainless Steel Rat. But he also wrote a plethora of lesser known short stories beginning in the 1950s.
    If you didn’t know better you would swear that Harrison didn’t write Welcoming Committee because in the October 1957 issue of Fantastic Universe magazine it is credited to Felix Boyd. Harrison used the pen name Felix Boyd three times. The Magazine, Fantastic Universe, the date October 1957, the page where it begins 92, the story, Welcoming Committee by Harry Harrison…

    Short Snorter by Charles Einstein - His saucer was parked in the woods, and Mr. Steariot (from Venus) was parked in the lobby....
    Three paths led through the woods away from the resort hotel, and of the three two were clearly marked: one with a sign that said it led to the lake, the other pointing toward the golf links. The third pathway was unmarked, and this was the one that inevitably the lovers and the honeymooners took—the path that Alice and Fred Daniels followed today.
    The sun was unusually warm for this time of year, but only a few yards along the pathway Fred and Alice were swallowed up by the great and near-great trees of the forest. The sunlight was, except for an occasional patch of light here and there, warded away by the foliage above. The forest was very quiet. The pathway bridged a silent brook, and then, perhaps a third of a mile into the woods, turned abruptly to the left and the woods became even more dense, the pathway narrow.
    Through the trees to the right at this point was a clearing, an unusual grassy circle perhaps sixty yards in diameter. It was not the clearing itself, however, but, instead, the glint of color in the sunlight that caused Fred and Alice to stop and look.
    Alice said, "Fred, what is that?"
    "Don't know," he said. "Something red. Let's look."
    The two of them turned off the path and made their way through a dismal barrage of thicket to the clearing that lay beyond. When they got there, they saw the circular object—vehicle might be a better word. It was possibly fifteen yards in diameter. It seemed to be made of three rings, smaller ones bottom and top and the larger one ribbing the center, and to be constructed of some kind of plastic. Between the central and upper rings were set a series of small windows. The entire thing was painted a gaudy red.
    "What do you think it is?" Fred said.
