Synopsis

In "A World Without God," Annie Besant presents a compelling critique of dogmatic religion and an exploration of secular humanism. Written in a period marked by intense philosophical debate, Besant employs a straightforward yet eloquent literary style, engaging readers in a dialogue that challenges the existence of a deity and advocates for reason as a guiding principle. Her arguments draw from diverse philosophical traditions, weaving together perspectives from science, ethics, and social reform, ultimately envisioning a unified moral framework independent of religious doctrine. This analytically rich text resonates within the broader literary context of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a time of burgeoning scientific discovery and the questioning of traditional beliefs. Annie Besant, a prominent theosophist, social activist, and advocate for women's rights, was deeply influenced by her experiences in the British political landscape and her involvement in social reform movements. Her journey from devout Christianity to embracing a secular worldview is a testament to her dedication to truth and rational inquiry. Besant's multifaceted background uniquely positions her to navigate the intricate relationship between religion and society, rendering her insights profoundly impactful and relevant. I highly recommend "A World Without God" to anyone interested in philosophy, religious studies, or the evolution of modern thought. Her accessible prose, coupled with rigorous analysis, invites both believers and skeptics to reflect critically on their beliefs, thereby stimulating meaningful dialogue about morality in a secular age.

“You don’t need a teacher perpetually. You need them to show you how to get through the doorway, but once you get through the doorway, you’re on your own. Then you have to grow and experience Enlightenment. Then you come back—if you want to go through a higher doorway—and so on and so on. They show you how to refine yourself until you’re able to enter into nirvana on your own. Then no more teacher. Guess what? Only Enlightenment everywhere.” Rama-Dr. Frederick Lenz, 1992
We think that the classic Enlightenment of the Buddha is far beyond our reach. What if it wasn’t?
As more and more people have found meditation and mindfulness beneficial, there has been little information on the underlying process, which Dr. Frederick Lenz (1950-1998), known to his students as Rama, called “self-discovery.” Self-discovery is the pathway to enlightenment, in which you realize that your ego is like an island in the middle of an ocean. Each meditation is taking a swim in that ocean. Self-discovery is becoming the ocean. While many of the things he taught can be found in spiritual books, many cannot, and none all in the same place.
At its core, this book presents the self-discovery process. Rama recorded 120 talks for his students covering it; the book's nearly 200 excerpts are him speaking to his students. Each chapter is devoted to an interdependent group of topics and presents the different aspects that he emphasized at different times, so that you get a complete picture. The chapters are arranged in a developmental order, beginning with the basics and culminating in the samadhis.
"Beyond the world of thought and sensorial impressions, there are planes and dimensions of perfect light, knowledge and radiant perfection. Meditation is simply a process of moving your awareness field from the awareness of this world, from the awareness of time and space, into eternity, into the eternal dimensions.” Rama-Dr. Frederick Lenz, 1992

Be encouraged! You're already "doing it right" just by doing it.

    · a must-have resource for parents who homeschool or who want to start
    · from the founder of the 1000 Hours Outside Movement
    · equips parents with the confidence and tools they need to give their children the education they dream of and deserve

During the past five years, homeschooling rates have been on the rise and show no signs of slowing. But many parents lack confidence, questioning whether they are doing it right (or whether they should take the plunge at all). With so many voices offering conflicting advice, it's hard to know where to start and where to go from there.

A homeschooling mother of five and founder of 1000 Hours Outside, Ginny Yurich draws from her years of experience and research, as well as her master's degree in education from the University of Michigan, to encourage and equip parents who want to give homeschooling a try or want to improve their experience.

Starting from the standpoint of "you're doing it right" instead of "you're doing it wrong," Ginny helps parents understand that just by choosing to homeschool they are
    · learning through living
    · allowing for individual timelines
    · leaving space for boredom
    · providing multiage experiences
    · teaching self-reliance
    · offering freedom
    · slowing down
    · and more

If you've been on the fence about homeschooling or wondering if you're doing it all wrong, let Ginny encourage you in all you've already accomplished and equip you for even greater things ahead.

A delightful Aztec work that has much to teach us about the value of giving thanks—to our contemporaries, our elders, and our ancestors

Centuries before anyone ever thought of keeping a gratitude journal, the Aztecs understood the profound value of being grateful. For generations, specially trained Aztec public speakers presented traditional dialogues at marriages, births, funerals, government ceremonies, and other important occasions. In these dialogues, people of different generations are imagined speaking to each other with mutual respect and gratitude across time, encouraging listeners to be grateful to their contemporaries, elders, and ancestors, as well as the divine, and reminding the living what they owe to future generations. In the late 1500s, one of these Aztec speakers, Pablo of Texcoco, recorded a collection of these dialogues, now known as the Bancroft Dialogues. In How to Be Grateful, Nahuatl- or Aztec-language specialist Frances Karttunen and Camilla Townsend, Cundhill History Prize–winning author of Fifth Sun: A New History of the Aztecs, present this fascinating work in an accessible translation.

    Leviathan

Leviathan is a book written by Thomas Hobbes and published in 1651. It is one of the most important works in political philosophy and is considered a cornerstone of modern political thought.
The main argument of Leviathan is that humans are fundamentally selfish and violent, and that without a strong government to control them, they would inevitably descend into a state of chaos and conflict. Hobbes famously characterized this state as "the war of all against all."
In order to avoid this scenario, Hobbes argued that individuals must surrender their natural rights to a sovereign authority. This sovereign, which Hobbes called the Leviathan, would have absolute power to enforce its will upon the people, and in exchange would provide them with security and protection.
Hobbes believed that the ideal form of government was an absolute monarchy, where the sovereign's power was not limited by any laws or institutions. He argued that any attempt to limit the power of the sovereign would be doomed to failure, as it would only lead to the re-emergence of the state of nature and the breakdown of society.
Leviathan is also notable for its contributions to social contract theory, which argues that individuals enter into a contract with their government in order to protect their rights and maintain order in society. Hobbes' social contract theory was influential in the development of political thought and continues to be studied and debated today.
