Beschreibung

Aristocrat and republican, socialist and artist, feminist and free spirit, Constance Markievicz née Gore-Booth was a pivotal figure in the revolutionary movement that culminated in the Rising of 1916, and in its long and painful aftermath leading to Irish Independence. She was also the first woman ever elected to Parliament and to hold a Cabinet position. From the privileged nineteenth-century world of her youth at Lissadell in Sligo and an artist's life in Paris, to the dramas and disappoint-ments of revolution and politics in Dublin, her compelling story provides an entrée to that tumultuous period in Irish history.
Since its first publication Anne Haverty's biography has been recognized as a landmark in Markievicz studies, giving a historically complete account of a woman often maligned and misunderstood. Her vivid and engagingly written story will be enjoyed as much by the general reader as by the serious student of Irish history. This revised, updated edition comes with a new introduction.

Corey, born in the early 90s to an unhappy couple who would often go on to describe him as a mistake, would go on to live his life full of very bizarre and unfortunate situations, whether it's through living in supposed haunted houses or many awkward sexual encounters, all whilst having to face continuous anxiety and depression on a daily basis. To say his life is eventful would be an understatement; it's so eventful, to the point that he would always be told by those who are aware of his story that he should write a book, and so here we are—the book has been written.
Throughout the course of this memoir, Corey takes us through the first 33 years of his life with locations ranging from Coventry to Manchester, from London to Blackpool, and from Butlins Skegness to Majorca. We delve into indie music scenes through various bands that Corey was a part of as well as a journey into his varied film taste, from Friday the 13th being the first horror film he watched in full all the way to Everything Everywhere All at Once changing his life and becoming his favourite film of all time upon seeing it at the cinema. Amongst all of this is a dark side, so much so to the point that Corey feels as though he's living through his own horror film as he faces the pressures of coming out of the closet, being in the middle of the many problems of his family, and facing bullies in various areas of life as well as the inescapable bully that is his own mind.
This is a book that has been written as a way of therapy, a way of finding humour in bad situations whilst acknowledging how serious everything is that he has been through over the years, and it's a way of reaching out to people who have been through similar weird, horrific, and difficult times as a helping hand of sorts, a bit of reassurance if you will, reassurance that you're not alone and that someone else has been through this and has lived to tell the tale.

Pablo Picasso is one of the world’s most famous artists, which adds to the challenge of examining his career, but it’s necessary to examine his entire career because of the way art was intertwined with his life. Even from an early age, it was clear that he subordinated any external concerns relating to his life in the interest of making art, which may have been the cause of the spirit of melancholy that can be found in his artwork. At the same time, the somber tone of some of his work can be directly contrasted against his playful formal experimentation.
In his review of Salvador Dali’s first autobiography, George Orwell declared that “One ought to be able to hold in one’s head simultaneously the two facts that Dali is a good draughtsman and a disgusting human being.” Whether or not one agrees with the famous author’s assessment, Orwell captures the polarizing nature of Salvador Dali, and the extent to which his undeniable technical virtuosity often brushed against his penchant for provoking his audiences (not to mention provoking long-entrenched standards of “proper” taste). Dali, after all, was unafraid to eschew Renaissance perspective, thereby incorporating often graphic subject matter. In other words, if Dali stands as one of the canonical figures of modern art, this involved holding both a seminal role in the canon of cutting-edge art but also a tendency to challenge audiences, challenging the contours of “Art with a Capital A.”
Abstraction had surfaced periodically across modernism and the avant-garde, principally in the works of the Surrealists and Cubists, as well as the compositions of Americans like Stuart Davis. Still, Jackson Pollock pushed abstraction well past what had come before him, raising abstraction to an extreme that seemed to somehow be both primitive and esoteric. To truly grasp the significance of Jackson Pollock in 20th century art, it’s necessary to understand the dramatic departure he initiated.

Saint Benedict of Nursia (c. 480 – 543 or 547) is honoured by the Catholic Church as the patron saint of Europe and students. Benedict founded twelve communities for monks at Subiaco, Italy (about 40 miles (64 km) to the east of Rome), before moving to Monte Cassino in the mountains of southern Italy. One of his most well known achievement is his "Rule of Saint Benedict", containing precepts for his monks. He is often called the founder of western monasticism. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia)
