Synopsis

The timeless tale of a horse named Beauty

With his fine black coat, his one white foot, and the distinctive white star on his forehead, Black Beauty is a magnificent creature, the pride of Squire Gordon's country estate. But when the squire has to move abroad, Beauty's fortunes change, and at the hands of other masters he suffers the cruelty and disregard that were sadly all too common for horses in Victorian England. In his wise, candid, and endearing voice, Black Beauty offers insight not just into his own experiences, but into the lives of Ginger, Merrylegs, Peggy, Captain, and all the special horses he meets along the way.

Written over a century and a half ago, Madame Bovary is still an extraordinarily fresh, exciting and shockingly frank novel, at once an acute psychological study of a woman drawn into adultery through circumstances we can partly understand, and a sharply-observed comedy that offers a fascinating glimpse of the social and cultural divisions running through French provincial society in the mid nineteenth century. This translation is by Eleanor Marx-Aveling, a prominent social activist and literary translator. She was the youngest daughter of Karl Marx.Gustave Flaubert was a highly influential, he has been considered the leading exponent of literary realism in his country. According to the literary theorist Kornelije Kvas, "in Flaubert, realism strives for formal perfection, so the presentation of reality tends to be neutral, emphasizing the values and importance of style as an objective method of presenting reality".He is known especially for his debut novel Madame Bovary (1857), his Correspondence, and his scrupulous devotion to his style and aesthetics. The celebrated short story writer Guy de Maupassant was a protégé of Flaubert. On the occasion of Flaubert's 198th birthday (12 December 2019), a group of researchers at CNRS published a neural language model under his name.

Science, better diet, advanced medicines are all part of a process that in the modern age keep most of us going to a ripe old age.

In previous times some diseases could only be slowed and not defeated. There toil of relentless attack on our physical forms brought misery and decay.

Add to this that within our number some will self-destruct, demons will pursue their inner thoughts and life will be too painful to bear. Some may shuffle off the mortal coil for no discernible reason, but life will end early, they will not take up their three-score year and ten.

In this collection of short stories some of our most popular and well-known authors are grouped together with an unfortunate tag: dead at 40.

These authors are not run-of-the-mill or ten a penny; many are literary leviathans who left enduring works of literature and sadly may have left us many more had they lived. We will never know.

Death for these authors was usually due to many health issues but primarily:—
Edgar Allan Poe — Several causes have been given but, in truth, it remains a mystery.
    Franz Kafka — Tuberculosis
Jack London — Dysentery, late-stage alcoholism, and uremia
Mary Dods (writing as David Lyndsey) — Liver disease
William Hope Hodgson — Killed at the Fourth Battle of Ypres in World War 1

Herbert George Wells (21 September 1866 - 13 August 1946) was an English writer. Prolific in many genres, he wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography and autobiography. His work also included two books on recreational war games. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called the "father of science fiction", along with Jules Verne and the publisher Hugo Gernsback.DOCTORS: In that extravagant world of which I dream, in which people will live in delightful cottages and ground rents will serve instead of rates, and everyone will have a chance of being happy-in that impossible world all doctors will be members of one great organisation for the public health, with all or most of their income guaranteed to them: I doubt if there will be any private doctors at all.

On an early October morning, Psyekoff, the right hand-man to Lieutenant Marcus Ivanovitch Klausoff, informs the inspector of police that he suspects Klausoff has been murdered. Immediately, the inspector and his team head to Klausoff's home to investigate the matter. After examining the outside of the house, the inspector sends word to the magistrate, asking him to come investigate the case. When the magistrate and his assistant arrive, they check Klausoff's room, only to find that he is not in there. His door is locked, but his window is clearly open. The situation reminds the magistrate of a case he worked several years earlier, where a man had been killed in his room and his body dragged out the window to remove the evidence. As the magistrate and his assistant look for and find clues, the assistant begins to piece together a story explaining what happened. Based on the evidence, he believes Klausoff was strangled, taken out through the window, hit on the head, and then disposed of somewhere. He also believes three people were involved in the murder. The magistrate is not convinced of that particular theory, but he begins questioning Klausoff's staff. Soon, he and his assistant believe they find two of the three people involved. One of the clues, a safety match found in Klausoff's room, the assistant believes will lead them to the third murderer. After he questions businesses in town about safety matches, he finds only one that sells them, and Klausoff's estranged wife recently bought a pack there. Convinced that Klausoff's estranged wife is the third murderer, he drags the magistrate to her house. But what they discover at her house throws a wrench into the assistant's theory and even the soundness of their biggest clue, the safety match.
