Beschreibung

A lyrical wilderness of power, wealth, leisure and desire, the poems of Country Club freewheel across state lines with panache and flagrant feeling. In this bold debut from Andy McGuire, all passions – even unpleasant ones – stare down the barrel of a world in which freedom is the fifty-first state, and love is the eleventh province.

The manatee wades out of the water and roars at the sightseersThat one of them owes him a drink. From the beach below the boardwalk, cock-a-doodle-do!What about a Christmas bowlcut over by the mangrove manatees!Because in Florida there are FloridiansAnd they are born Floridians at large.Every motionCan’t stop its own ocean. The oceans' motions make mistakes. Some of the dying are unspeakableIn their thinness, poorly disguised meat mannequins. The mosquitoes are so bigThey bleed you like a pig.Being eaten alive is an acquired taste.

The undisputed master of the short story, Saki's name is synonymous with brilliant writing that satirises Edwardian Society, and his plays were no exception. In his only full-length play, 'The Watched Pot', Trevor Bavvel, sole heir to a country estate, is in want of a wife, but must operate under the strict attention of his miserly mother Hortensia.
Although wildly neglected today, Saki's plays met with widespread acclaim in his day, and he was even compared favourably with the great Oscar Wilde. This complete edition of Saki's plays – the first complete edition ever published – demonstrates the great writer's prowess as a playwright, and sparkles with the same wit as the short stories that have enchanted generations of readers.

The stereotypical image of a poet is one of unknown talent starving in a garret and who’s faithfulness and legacy to the art is discovered only after their death.
In some cases this is undoubtedly true, but Poets being human and with the same building blocks of physical and mental health as the rest of us, also had the same afflictions and problems as the rest of us.
The long roll call of names and the truncated legacies that were left behind is filled with these lost talents.
In this volume we bring together those writers of verse and poetry who sadly died so young that their works may be small in number but glint with such brave, revealing and inventive verse that one can only imagine what heights poetry with their full lives could have been taken to.

White Ghosts, the debut collection by poet and novelist Katie Hale, traces maternal lines, and the legacies of slavery and whiteness interwoven into the fabric of America, through revealing, unflinching poems. Travelling deep into an intimate history that spans both sides of the Atlantic, Hale unravels the language haunting those narratives we choose to tell in official versions – through museum labels and civic statues – and in handed-down stories.
Transformational and challenging, these sharply-detailed poems interrogate the bare bones of silence, complicity, difficult inheritances and racial constructs. Via wagon routes or interstates, on desert highways or in the landscapes of northern England, through nature and through human culture, questions of ownership and power are writ into the journey. Through four hundred years of female migration, the poems in White Ghosts use art, music, and lyrical reworking of the curated space, to address white guilt: what is lost through generations, and what is passed on?

    (“Love compelled me to write”)
As with most art, the words in this book were inspired by love.
Inspired by women I have loved and one in particular, who I may have loved before.
The woman who inspired many of these words is one of the very few truly spiritual people I’ve ever known. In spite of a life often tormented by cruelty and neglect, she retained a rare spirituality and compassion.
She enriched my life and for that I will never forget her.
These are some of the poems.
Written over the past couple of years (something creative came out of the COVID lockdown). Some describe experiences and feelings directly related to my relationships and circumstances. Some figments of my imagination.
This book is divided into three sections:
    Life, Love, and Loss
You can start reading from the beginning through to the end, or you can pick a section depending on your mood, or dip in and out at random.
