  Hermes Mercurius Trismegistus is the founding stone of Western esotericism. Hermes is regarded as being the author of numerous philosophical and spiritual texts, including the Divine Pymander. Even though the historical existence of Hermes is not clear, he has been regarded as the master of wisdom and the initiator of the divine knowledge for centuries. The Divine Pymander is one of the ancient texts attributed to Hermes. The Divine Pymander explains a cosmology and philosophy which blends Egyptian, Greek, and Jewish mystical traditions. It is presented as a dialogue between Hermes and a student who is seeking the divine knowledge. Dialogue includes teachings on the nature of the universe, the soul, and the relationship between humanity and God. The most important central themes of the Divine Pymander is the thought that the cosmos is a manifestation of the divine mind. Furthermore, the human soul is explained as a reflection of this divine intelligence. Hermes tells us that the goal of spiritual practice is to awaken the divine spark within the soul and unite with the divine mind. Spiritual enlightenment includes the purification of the soul by contemplation, prayer and meditation. Hermes also highlights the importance of living a virtuous life, avoiding attachment to material things, cultivation of gratitude and reverence for the divine.

  The Thirty Years' War was one of the most horrific conflicts in history, and though it is widely viewed as a religious struggle, that was only part of the complicated war. Calvinists and Lutherans did not get along, and both persecuted some of the more radical Anabaptist sects. At the same time, one major motivation behind the war was Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II’s determination to rule all of the empire and not be just a figurehead. There were struggles between rulers and their estates over power, and Catholic France later entered the war on the side of the Protestants in order to counter the Habsburgs’ power.  
  	The Battle of Breitenfeld, fought in September 1631, was one of the most decisive moments of the war. It was the first major Protestant victory and widely considered the crowning achievement of Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus’ military career. Through his establishment of communication and supply lines at strategic points across the Baltic Sea, the securing of Protestant alliances, and his use of combined arms, amongst his other trademark techniques, the Swedish forces, against all odds, defeated their rivals. Such was the devastation inflicted upon their opponents that the Count of Tilly, the chief commander of the Catholic League's armies, had no other choice but to retreat. 6,000 or so Catholic soldiers were captured, many of them later incorporated into the Protestant forces. Whatever remained of the survivors vanished into the dark of the night.

  To be a “Buddhist” without making any attempt to put the principles into practice is nonsensical. Buddhism is essentially something to do rather than something to believe. The attainment of the higher wisdom will, for most people at least, be a long task which may not be fully achieved in this lifetime. But those who are sincerely treading the path will stand out. They will have something about them which subtly marks them out. They will be mindful, compassionate, considerate to others. While they will not rush round offering good advice to all and sundry unasked, they may well be the kind of people whom those in need of advice and help will instinctively turn to. They will be good citizens of the world, for the very reason that they are not too much caught up in its meretricious attractions.
