Explore the rich traditions of the French and German countryside in a collection that balances humor with the grotesque. The book includes a variety of stories that highlight the moral lessons and cultural fears of the societies that created them. Theodora Sarah Orne Jewett was born on 3rd September 1849 in South Berwick, Maine, to a family that had resided in New England for several generations.

From early childhood Jewett suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and one remedy was frequent walks which contributed to her life-long love of nature.

She was primarily educated at Miss Olive Rayne's school and then the Berwick Academy from where she graduated in 1866. But much of her time was also spent reading from the extensive collection of books in the family library.

In 1868 at age 19, she was published ‘Jenny Garrow's Lovers’ in the Atlantic Monthly, and from this grew a reputation that was lauded and admired by both her captivated audience and such other noted writers as William Dean Howells.

As well as novels and short stories she also wrote children’s books and poetry volumes. Jewett was also admired for the strong female characters who were as intelligent and able as any man around them.

In her personal life Jewett was attracted and attached to several women. Many of her poems reveal the intensity of her feelings towards them. Whether Jewett found physical love with them is open to debate but she often did find devoted and loving friendship, humor and literary encouragement. From 1881, after the death of James Fields, the editor of the Atlantic Monthly, she set up home with his widow, Annie, for the rest of her life in what was termed ‘a Boston Marriage’; the cohabitation of two wealthy women, independent of male financial support.

On her birthday in 1902, Jewett was involved in a carriage accident that effectively ended her literary career.

In March 1909 Sarah Orne Jewett was paralyzed by a stroke, and after another on 24th June she died in her South Berwick home. She was 59.

Nothing makes me happier than helping my serious, reclusive boss…but his next project requires a wife!
I’m a meek little mouse of an assistant who calls my boss “Mr. Newton Smith” more often than not, but when I overhear that Rufus’s business partner is bent on embarrassing him for making up a fake fiancée, I know I need to reinvent myself—as his wife-to-be.
I only expect a single night of playing pretend. I don’t expect every detail Rufus has told people about his fake fiancée to be me. Now there is new meaning in every careful look he gives me, every quiet lean against my desk, and the way he rumbles that I’m a good girl.
The truth is, though, that I don’t feel good. I feel deeply wicked for how far I want to take this game of make believe. I want Mr. Newton Smith to consummate our fake relationship and make it very, very real, and take my V-card while he’s at it.
Wife Project is a short, spicy novella about an innocent assistant and the big man who has been waiting for her his whole life.

Christmas ushers in snowstorms, fruitcake, and a horde of Santa's naughty elves . . .

No place is more perfect for the winter holidays than the charming mountain town of Estes Park. As the Cozy Corgi Bookshop and Bakery glistens with lights and garlands, Winifred Page allows the seasonal merriment to brush away all worry and fear. Watson, her grumpy corgi, is about as far from stressed as possible—after all, with the holiday baking, delectable crumbs are everywhere.

Estes Park's new Christmas store is chosen to receive exclusive rights to sell a much-coveted collection of tiny elf figurines, but not everyone is thrilled, especially not the owner of the original Christmas shop. Bickering between local merchants is nothing new and doesn't dampen the Christmas cheer or holiday glee. However, when nightly break-ins begin to occur, Santa himself is caught in the act, Fred and Watson are pulled away from the bookshop to investigate the holiday mayhem.

Unfortunately, while Santa keeps a list of nice and naughty children, he's allowed his elves to have free rein, and there's nothing nice about them . . .
