Andrew Lang

Andrew Lang (1844-1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. He is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. The Andrew Lang lectures at the University of St. Andrews are named after him.
From Lang’s fundamental essay Custom and Myth, published in 1884, we have drawn the study Star Myths, which today we propose to modern readers.
According to Lang, «As the star-stories told by the Greeks, the ancient Egyptians, and other civilised people of the old world, exactly correspond in character, and sometimes even in incident, with the star-stories of modern savages, we have the choice of three hypotheses to explain this curious coincidence. Perhaps the star-stories, about nymphs changed into bears, and bears changed into stars, were invented by the civilised races of old, and gradually found their way amongst people like the Eskimo, and the Australians, and Bushmen. Or it may be insisted that the ancestors of Australians, Eskimo, and Bushmen were once civilised, like the Greeks and Egyptians, and invented star-stories, still remembered by their degenerate descendants. These are the two forms of the explanation which will be advanced by persons who believe that the star-stories were originally the fruit of the civilised imagination».

On August 15, 1988, in the Louisiana Superdome, Reagan delivered a message for economic freedom. We transformed our government from one that was consuming our prosperity into one that would get out of the way of those who create prosperity.
Reagan notes the “inflated rhetoric of our friends in Atlanta last month. But then, inflation is their specialty.” As John Adams said, “Facts are stubborn things.”
When we came to Washington, we suffered the worst back-to-back years of inflation in 60 years, interest rates over 21 percent, declining productivity, weekly wages, and family income, the highest tax bill in history, and a 21 percent misery index.
The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Iran stormed our embassy and took Americans hostage. The world questioned our resolve.
We responded by cutting taxes and creating over 17 million jobs. Inflation is below 4 percent and interest rates cut in half. “I noticed they don’t call it Reaganomics anymore.”
We rebuilt our armed forces, and liberated Grenada. During our administration “not 1 inch of ground has fallen to the Communists.” We're working on the Strategic Defense Initiative to protect ourselves and our allies against nuclear terror.
Liberal elites resisted our defense buildup, our tax cuts, cutting fat out of government, and appointing judges committed to the Constitution. I’ve supported a balanced budget amendment and line-item veto, and every year the liberals said no.
We need Republican majorities in both houses. America needs George Bush. “Go out there and win one for the Gipper.”
God put this land between two great oceans to be found by people with a love of freedom, freedom of association, of worship, of hope and opportunity. Here, it’s sunrise every day with new opportunities and dreams to build.

This audiobook is divided into units.While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Greek.
In Unit 1 you will hear Greek decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Greek speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Greek. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Greek at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Greek, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.
In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.

The Golden Verses of Pythagoras

In this small volume an attempt has been made to gather together the best and most reliable of the sets of Ethical Verses attributed to the Pythagoreans.Both Hall's translation from the Greek (1657), and Rowe's translation from the French of André Dacier (1707), have been used in reproducing the Golden Verses of Pythagoras, but Dacier's version has been almost exclusively followed, being clearer and more intelligible.The Golden Sentences of Democrates, the Similitudes of Demophilus, and Pythagorean Symbols are from Bridgman's translation, and are to be found in his little book, Translations from the Greek, published in 1804. The Pythagorean Sentences of Demophilus, translated by Taylor, are contained in that volume also.The remaining sets of verses, translated by Taylor, are appended by him to his Iamblichus' Life of Pythagoras, published in 1818.
