Synopsis

It's the aftermath of the second opium war in Southeast Asia. Declan Malcolm, the newly elected captain, must lead a crew of sailors to navigate the treacherous high seas while protecting goods for a local triad leader, Three-Finger Tang.

At the same time, Civil War veterans Ridley and Dranoff are adjusting to post-reconstruction and become mercenaries for hire.

Both groups seek purpose to their life, and their paths cross by chance. But when a celebration of good fortune turns dangerous, the mariners and soldiers must join forces to vanquish a supernatural foe - or die trying.

    Title: The Horla
    Author: Guy de Maupassant
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1887
    Public Domain: Yes
Series Placement: Timeless Terrors No. 64
    Description:
The Horla is one of Guy de Maupassant’s most unsettling tales — a study of madness, obsession, and the invisible forces that may govern our lives. Told in the form of a diary, the story follows an unnamed narrator whose calm, orderly life gradually unravels as he becomes convinced that an unseen, supernatural being is haunting him — controlling his thoughts, his desires, and even his will to live.
Maupassant blends psychological horror with the uncanny, crafting a story where fear grows not from gore, but from the creeping realization that the human mind may be powerless against what it cannot perceive. The ordinary becomes sinister: windows seem to watch, the air feels heavy with presence, and the night is filled with a silent, inescapable dread.
Narrated by Amazon-bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance captures the mounting terror and disorientation of Maupassant’s masterpiece. While the text itself is fully in the public domain, this narration and production are copyright © 2025 Jonathan Dunne.
Part of Timeless Terrors, a series devoted to reviving the classics of horror, The Horla is a chilling reminder that some fears are real — and some presences are beyond comprehension. 🕯️

From the bestselling author of Lady of Hay comes this atmospheric and gripping page-turner.
Recently divorced Anna Fox decides to cheer herself up by retracing a journey her great grandmother Louisa made in the mid-nineteenth century – a Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan. Anna carries with her two of Louisa’s possessions: an ancient Egyptian scent bottle and an illustrated diary of the original cruise that has lain unread for over a hundred years.
As she follows in Louisa’s footsteps, Anna discovers in the diary a wonderful Victorian love story – and the chilling secret of the little glass bottle. Meanwhile two men from the tour party develop an unfriendly rivalry for her attention, while showing a disturbing interest in Louisa’s mementoes.
