Synopsis

NATIONAL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE - CyprusIn the age of David Hockney, Derek Jarman, Kenneth Anger and Andy Warhol, when bisexuality was at first radical and then trendy, a young man is faced with the ambiguity of sexual roles and oscillates between In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower and Special Friendships.

A frank and moving coming of age autobiographical novel about self discovery, love, art, sexual and artistic identity. A journey leading from the swinging London of the late '60s to contemporary Alexandria.

Weaving personal experience with modern social and historical events, internationally acclaimed Cypriot artist Andreas Karayan brings forth IMMORAL TALES, a book inhabited by colorful characters that captures the essence of life.

IMMORAL TALES is one part of a semi-autobiographical trilogy, but it is autonomous; it follows a young man’s search for his artistic and sexual identity during his formative years.

Art and passion converge in Andreas Karayan’s cosmopolitan gaze. His trilogy explores key historical, political and social events which have shaped contemporary Europe, as the backdrop for both the life of his protagonist and his own. More specifically, “Immoral Tales: London – Alexandria,” Karayan explores the world-changing events of late 60’s and early 70’s in London, and how they influenced his decision to abandon medicine for the arts. The second part of the book explores the pre-revolutionary contemporary Alexandria.

The first of the genre in this part of the world, the book fosters a better understanding of art and sexuality, while emphasizing LGBT and other human rights issues. It is considered a landmark in Cyprus, since it is the first to explore themes which were previously considered taboo.

Grounds for the Literary AwardThe book is a candid look at the life of the author, in the form of an autobiographical novel. Through a patchwork of images, Andreas Karayan succeeds with real verve and sensibility in describing the conflicting attractions of his body and soul. The book is a profound self-examination, which blends organically place and time, conveying their atmosphere elegantly with a disarming sincerity. It is in essence a bold attempt to seek identity without the author resorting to self-censorship. On the contrary, he unveils himself and his conflicts finding in the process of writing wholeness, in the interaction of art and life. The writer swathes the facts of his life in a poetic myth and successfully sketches characters who, with their individuality, are in the end transformed into dramatis personae. The whole is presented in an airy manner, with a sense of humor and self-mockery, but also with rich cultural references which bear witness to a good education.

About the authorAndreas Karayan was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1943. He is a well-known Cypriot artist and a pioneer of LGBT rights in Cyprus through his paintings, writings and actions. He studied medicine at the University of Athens and graduated in 1967. He moved to London where he was seduced by the atmosphere of the late '60s and abandoned medicine in favor of art, studying at the Central and Camberwell Schools of Art. He then took an engraving course in Germany and lived in Berlin for a considerable time. He represented Cyprus at the Venice Biennale in 2001, and at the Cairo Biennale in 2006. He also illustrated poems of K. P. Cavafy, which were published in Berlin. From 1978 to 2004, he involved himself with journalism, theatre and cinema criticism. After an invitation from the Library of Alexandria in 2007, he lived in the city and produced a series of works on Alexandrian themes, which were exhibited at the Library. He is the author of three novels in Greek (“A true tale”, “Immoral Tales”, and “Dark Tales”). Nowadays, he lives and works in Nicosia, Alexandria, and Athens.

A faith-based journey of the heart as a woman seeks healing from a troubled past by looking to one of the Bible’s most misunderstood characters.   While many have written about healing in the aftermath of divorce, few have opened their hearts as fully as Jeannie Keneley does in Beyond My Yesterdays. With generosity and candor, Jeannie gives us insight into her private world of devastation and hope in the process of healing from abuse, betrayal, and abandonment.   A successful entrepreneur who built and sold four interior design businesses over the course of her career, Jeannie is now a full-time Christian author and speaker with a passionate heart for those who hurt, and an encouraging message for those who finds themselves lonely and lost in life. For at the same time Jeannie was reaching the heights of professional success, she kept making wrong turns in her search for personal happiness. After three destructive marriages and divorces, Jeannie finally came to the end of her “dark night of the soul” and found her answers in the arms of her Creator.   In Beyond My Yesterdays, Jeannie explores the biblical story of the Woman at the Well. She shares a story of two women separated by two thousand years, yet intrinsically bonded by one shared experience. As we look at these women, our eyes are opened to new insights and truths of the magnificent power of healing through God’s amazing grace.

    AN OLD WAY OF LIFE
Thirty-year-old Barbara Weaver was content to live as the Amish have for centuries—without modern convenience—but her husband, Eli, wanted a life beyond horses and buggies. Soon he gave in to the temptation of technology and found ways to go online and meet women. When Barbara was found dead, shot in the chest at close range, all eyes were on Eli . . . and his mistress, a Conservative Mennonite named Barb Raber.
    A NEW KIND OF BETRAYAL—AND DEATH . . .
Barb drove Eli to appointments in her car. She gave him everything he asked for: a laptop, rides to his favorite fishing and hunting spots—and sex. Above all, she gave him the cell phone he would use to plan a murder. The Weaver case marked only the third time an Amish man was suspected of killing his wife in more than two hundred years in America. But the investigation raised almost as many questions as it answered: Was Barb Raber the one who fired the fatal shot? Or was Barbara Weaver dead before someone entered the house? What did Eli's friends, family, and church really know about him? And will life among the "Plain People" ever be the same?

    Tamerlane: The Life and Legacy...

Though history is usually written by the victors, the lack of a particularly strong writing tradition from the Mongols ensured that history was largely written by those who they vanquished. Because of this, their portrayal in the West and the Middle East has been extraordinarily (and in many ways unfairly) negative for centuries, at least until recent revisions to the historical record. The Mongols have long been depicted as wild horse-archers galloping out of the dawn to rape, pillage, murder and enslave, but the Mongol army was a highly sophisticated, minutely organized and incredibly adaptive and innovative institution, as witnessed by the fact that it was successful in conquering enemies who employed completely different weaponry and different styles of fighting, from Chinese armored infantry to Middle Eastern camel cavalry and Western knights and men-at-arms. Likewise, the infrastructure and administrative corps which governed the empire, though largely borrowed from the Chinese, was inventive, practical, and extraordinarily modern and efficient. This was no fly-by-night enterprise but a sophisticated, complex, and extremely well-oiled machine.
Aside from Genghis and his grandson Kublai Khan, the most famous Mongol conqueror was Tamerlane, who dominated Eurasia in the 14th century. He was known by the name Timur in Asia, while the Europeans used the name Tamerlane, which came from the Persian Timur-i-Leng, meaning “Timur the Lame.” This was intended to be an insult referring to crippling injuries he received to his right leg and arm as a young man, probably from arrows, but clearly his injuries did not prevent him from spending much of his lifetime in the saddle. Tamerlane came from a Turkicized Mongol tribe, the Barlas, which had several constituent sub-clans. A number of original Mongol tribes had migrated west, where the majority of the population was Turkish, and over time, the Mongols blended with the Turks.

John Fletcher's comedy (probably written and performed around 1611) is a sequel to Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, in which, as the title suggests, the tamer will be tamed. Petruchio, the shrew-tamer, has been widowed, and marries a second wife, Maria, a "chaste witty lady." At the instigation of her cousin Bianca, and with the fellowship of her sister Livia, Maria decides to go on strike for equal rights, refusing to behave as a proper 17th century wife. Fletcher's play addresses the issue of men and women's roles within marriage, a controversial issue for his day. (Summary by Elizabeth Klett)
