Beschreibung

In "Star Born," Andre Norton weaves a captivating tale that fuses science fiction with themes of courage, identity, and the intricate bonds of companionship. Set against a richly imagined galactic backdrop, this novel follows the journey of Dagar, a young man with psychic abilities, as he navigates interstellar peril and personal growth. Norton's prose is marked by a unique blend of suspense and philosophical reflection, employing a narrative style that is both accessible and evocative, appealing to readers who appreciate nuanced character development and imaginative world-building within the literary context of mid-20th-century speculative fiction. Andre Norton, an eminent figure in science fiction and fantasy literature, has influenced the genre since the 1930s. Her experiences as a librarian and her deep fascination with mythology and ancient cultures undoubtedly shaped her storytelling approach, promoting powerful themes of diversity and introspection. "Star Born" emerged during a pivotal era in science fiction when authors began to explore more complex characterizations and social issues, allowing Norton to build on her legacy of pioneering force within the field. I wholeheartedly recommend "Star Born" to any reader eager to explore a richly textured narrative that speaks to the heart of what it means to be human, even in the vastness of space. This novel not only entertains but also invites reflection on the nature of belonging and destiny, making it a significant contribution to the science fiction canon.

The Stockbroker's Clerk is one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is the fourth of the twelve collected in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes in most British editions of the canon, and third of eleven in most American ones (owing to the omission of the "scandalous" "Adventure of the Cardboard Box"). The story was first published in Strand Magazine in March 1893 and featured seven illustrations by Sidney Paget. Famous works of the author Arthur Conan Doyle: A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, His Last Bow, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, Stories of Sherlock Holmes, The Lost World.

Six has always been a number we group things around – Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.
