Synopsis

“Accessible . . . Engaging . . . May well be our fullest account to date of what Bleikasten calls Faulkner’s ‘energy for life’ and ‘will to write.’” —Theresa Towner, author of The Cambridge Introduction to William Faulkner   Writing to American poet Malcolm Cowley in 1949, William Faulkner expressed his wish to be known only through his books—but his wish would not come true. He would go on to win the Nobel Prize for literature several months later, and when he died famous in 1962, his biographers immediately began to unveil and dissect the unhappy life of “the little man from Mississippi.”   Despite the many works published about Faulkner, his life and career, it still remains a mystery how a poet of minor symbolist poems rooted in the history of the Deep South became one of the greatest novelists of the twentieth century. Here, renowned critic André Bleikasten revisits Faulkner’s biography through the author’s literary imagination. Weaving together correspondence and archival research with the graceful literary analysis for which he is known, Bleikasten presents a multi-strand account of Faulkner’s life in writing.   By carefully keeping both the biographical and imaginative lives in hand, Bleikasten teases out threads that carry the reader through the major events in Faulkner’s life, emphasizing those circumstances that mattered most to his writing: the weight of his multi-generational family history in the South; the formation of his oppositional temperament provoked by a resistance to Southern bourgeois propriety; his creative and sexual restlessness and uncertainty; his lifelong struggle with finances and alcohol; his paradoxical escape to the bondages of Hollywood; and his final bent toward self-destruction. This is the story of the man who wrote timeless works and lived in and through his novels.

For many of the 40 million Americans who undergo anesthesia each year, it is a source of great fear and fascination. In Counting Backwards, Dr. Henry Jay Przybylo—an anesthesiologist with more than thirty years of experience—has written an unforgettable account of the routine procedure's daily dramas and fundamental mysteries. Przybylo has administered anesthesia more than 30,000 times in his career—erasing consciousness, denying memory, and immobilizing the body before reversing all of these effects—on newborn babies, screaming toddlers and sullen teenagers, his own son, and even a gorilla. With compassion and candor, he weaves his experiences into intimate stories that explore the nature of consciousness, the politics of pain relief, and the wonder of modern medicine.
Through its intense and humane tales of mistakes, near-disasters, life-saving successes, and moments of grace, Counting Backwards shines a light on one of the most fascinating but unexplored corners of the medical world.

“Kyle Adams’ book contains valuable lessons for leaders in all walks of life. There is so much more to be gained from basketball than money, glory, or even scholarships. Discarding the Mask is a blueprint on how to fully realize these benefits and uplift our communities.”
Jesse Washington, co-author of I Came as a Shadow, the autobiography of John Thompson.
Basketball is more than free throws, three-pointers, early practices, and away games. It’s about authenticity and learning how to meet each player where they are. It’s about cultivating a team individually and collectively to show them the value each teammate has — on and off the court.
Discarding the Mask reveals the man behind every title he carries. The pages of this book uncover remarkable life lessons Kyle Adams learned throughout his tenure coaching women’s basketball. He is an open book as he pens his journey of being a coach and the mentorship he embodies to provide a safe space for student-athletes. He candidly shares his greatest influences, life’s challenges, and the transformational relationships that have shaped him throughout his coaching and leadership journey. Throughout every chapter, you will see the common thread of meaningful connections and the Soul Sacrifices of a Coach as he strives to leave a lasting impact on everyone he engages.

Abraham Lincoln towers above the others who have held the office of president — the icon of greatness, the pillar of strength whose words bound up the nation's wounds. His presidency is the hinge on which American history pivots, the time when the young republic collapsed of its own contradictions and a new birth of freedom, sanctified by blood, created the United States we know today. His story has been told many times, but never by a man who himself sought the office of president and contemplated the awesome responsibilities that come with it.

Explore the human side of the Civil War through archival images and biographical sketches of Confederate and Union sailors.

During the American Civil War, more than one hundred thousand men fought on ships at sea or on one of America’s great inland rivers. There were no large-scale fleet engagements, yet the navies, particularly the Union Navy, did much to define the character of the war and affect its length. The first hostile shots roared from rebel artillery at Charleston Harbor. Along the Mississippi River and other inland waterways across the South, Union gunboats were often the first to arrive in deadly enemy territory. In the Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic seaboard, blockaders in blue floated within earshot of gray garrisons that guarded vital ports. And on the open seas, rebel raiders wreaked havoc on civilian shipping.

In Faces of the Civil War Navies, Civil War photograph collector Ronald S. Coddington focuses his skills on the Union and Confederate navies. Using identifiable cartes de visite of common sailors on both sides of the war, many of them never before published, Coddington uncovers the personal histories of each individual. These unique narratives are drawn from military and pension records, letters, diaries, period newspapers, and other primary sources. In addition to presenting the personal stories of seventy-seven intrepid volunteers, Coddington also focuses on the momentous naval events that ushered in an era of ironclad ships and other technical innovations.

Taken collectively, these “snapshots” show that the history of war is not merely a chronicle of campaigns won and lost, it is the collective personal odysseys of thousands of individual men.

A touching tribute to the life and work of George Harrison. Much more than the inspirational heart of the Beatles, he was also the godfather of world music, an early advocate of yoga, a dedicated environmentalist, fountainhead of many charitable causes, and a brilliant composer and lyricist. Giuliano spent 30 years researching the life of this man, even living amongst him in pastoral Henley during George’s “quiet years” of tending his Victorian gardens and writing music that remains mostly unheard to this day.
