Beschreibung

"World War 2" offers a comprehensive exploration of the global conflict that reshaped the 20th century. It examines the political tensions, military strategies, and key battles from the European campaigns to the Pacific theater, providing a detailed account of this pivotal era in military history. The book delves into the failures of diplomacy, the rise of aggressive ideologies, and the consequences of unchecked militarism, highlighting how these factors culminated in a devastating global catastrophe. Understanding the Second World War is essential for grasping 20th-century history and the geopolitical landscape that persists today. The book commences by analyzing the interwar period, including the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations, and progresses through major theaters of war. Core to the narrative are analyses of pivotal battles like Stalingrad, Midway, and D-Day, exploring the strategies and leadership decisions that shaped their outcomes. By combining primary sources with insights from historians and military strategists, "World War 2" presents a balanced and critical examination of the war's causes, key events, and long-term consequences.

An insider's look into the largely anonymous volunteers in local party organizations who make decisions in elections with profound implications for American democracy.

Although scholars have long recognized that local American parties play an important role in elections, surprisingly little is known about the individuals who lead these typically small, volunteer-based organizations. As David Doherty, Conor M. Dowling, and Michael G. Miller show in Small Power, local party leaders influence the electoral process in myriad ways: They recruit and support candidates, interface with state-wide and federal campaigns, and get out the vote in their communities. Drawing from a survey of over 850 Democratic and Republican local party chairs, a nationally representative sample of voters, and dozens of in-depth interviews, the authors describe how parties are organized, who party chairs are, and how they serve the party. Leveraging novel experiments that illuminate how chairs make choices about which individuals to recruit as candidates—as well as whether those choices reflect voters' preferences—Small Power sheds new light on how seemingly mundane local decisions can shape party goals, influence candidate pipelines, and affect who ends up winning elections.

"Perceiving that much of the intrinsic value of these Journals would consist in a proper understanding of the historical facts to which allusions are made in them, I prevailed upon Mr. LOSSING, the well-known author of the "_Pictorial Field-Book of the Revolution_" to illustrate and elucidate these diaries by explanatory notes. His name is a sufficient guaranty for their accuracy and general usefulness" (Summary from the introduction)

The history of the Spanish Peninsula is closely bound to that of the Moors. The term “Spain” was not in wide use until the region was united by the monarchs of Aragon and Castile, and the Moors called the lands they ruled in the Iberian Peninsula Al-Andalus, traditionally thought to be an Arabic transliteration of Vandal, the Germanic tribe which briefly ruled the region in the early fifth century. The English name Andalusia derives from the Spanish Andalucia, which is still used by Spain to name its southern region.
Not surprisingly, three religions attempting to coexist during medieval times resulted in nearly incessant conflicts, marked by high taxation, disparate societies, rigid cultural controls, and systemic violence. Despite the odds, these three religions managed to live in a state of quasi-acceptance and peace in most of the major cities in the Iberian Peninsula like Cordoba and Toledo, with sporadic warfare occurring on the borders between Al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms near the Pyrenees Mountains. Muslims, Christians, and Jews would attempt to reorganize their societies several times over the centuries through warfare, always with Jews on the lower rungs and Christians and Muslims fighting it out above them.
Though it’s often forgotten today, the fighting that took place during the Reconquista was not originally driven by religion. Instead, the majority of the battles were fought by ambitious rulers who sought territorial expansion, like many other civilizations during the Middle Ages. In fact, the Reconquista would not gain its unique religious flavor until the 13th century, when the territories that would become Castile and Aragon drummed up religious fervor to achieve its aims and gained papal support from Rome.

Despite several decades of so-called independence from colonial rule, representative government has largely remained elusive in many African countries, compromised by systemic corruption and political tyranny.
Widespread apathy from years of living under harsh realities has led to younger Africans speaking out against deplorable leadership and governance that ignore their basic needs and actively rob them of a brighter future.
Indeed, the future ought to be brighter for a continent that consistently ranks as having the youngest demographic in the world. Want to be a part of the new dawn in any way? If yes, this audiobook is for you!
