Synopsis

Voting Rights History explores the long, complex journey of enfranchisement, from ancient roots to modern challenges. It examines the philosophical underpinnings of suffrage, the mechanisms used to deny voting rights, and the strategies employed to overcome barriers to participation. The book argues that expanding voting rights has not been a straight path; instead, it's a recurring cycle of progress followed by setbacks, demanding constant vigilance. One intriguing aspect is how the definition of "citizen" has been continuously redefined, often excluding groups based on race, gender or class.

The book progresses chronologically and thematically, beginning with ancient Greece and Rome before moving to modern democracies, including significant focus on the United States. It scrutinizes historical events from the Founding Fathers' limited vision to the Civil War Amendments, the Jim Crow era, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. A key strength lies in its cyclical perspective on voting rights struggles, challenging the idea of inevitable progress and highlighting the historical context of current debates like voter ID laws and gerrymandering.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
Lessons From Nature: Finding Wisdom in the World Around Us is a collaboration between photographer Wadih Moussa and psychologist Dr. Valeria Ecaterina Purcia, blending the quiet beauty of nature with the clarity of psychological insight.
In the audiobook edition, each chapter begins with a brief description of a photograph—a still moment captured in nature—followed by a reflection on the life lesson it holds: the diligence of a bee, the endurance of a tree, the contentment of a bird. These stories invite the listener to slow down, pay attention, and discover how nature mirrors the values that ground and sustain us.
Adding depth to each chapter, Dr. Purcia draws on her experience as a psychologist, educator, and author to explore the emotional and mental dimensions of these natural lessons. Her contributions turn each entry into a practical meditation on resilience, self-awareness, and personal growth.
This audiobook is both contemplative and usable. It speaks to those who crave meaning in a noisy world, who want to reconnect with themselves, and who believe that nature still has something to teach us if we’re willing to listen.
Whether drawn by the imagery, the life lessons, or the psychological reflections, listeners will find here a quiet space for renewal. A place to pause. A path back to balance.

For many, the Rus might be synonyms for Russia or Russians, perhaps an early form of the civilization that later became Russia. This is partly true. Modern-day Russia lays claim as a successor to the Rus, particularly the Kievan Rus empire that dominated, with oscillating borders, the area around today’s Kiev and Ukraine between the 8th and 11th centuries. Crucially, the Rus had roots in the Nordic region. Initially, they would travel into modern-day Russia, Ukraine, and beyond to trade. Only later would they start to settle in the region and then become known as the Rus.
As with many other groups, the origins of the Rus are tied to the dominance of the Vikings over Western Europe in the early part of the Dark Ages or Medieval Era. Their Scandinavian brethren also traveled eastwards, behaving in similar ways but ultimately settling and assimilating in the region in an idiosyncratic manner. The Rus focused on several trade routes. The most important of these was the “eastern” route towards the Caspian Sea and stretching as far as Baghdad in the Middle East. This then gave way to the “western” route leading through Kiev to the Black Sea and Byzantine capital city Constantinople. The Rus also developed other trade routes, including to Western Europe.
Eventually, the Rus began to establish permanent settlements, firstly in Novgorod and then south to Kiev. This will be accompanied by the exploration of growing Rus dominance of this region, particularly through historical figures in the Rurikid dynasty such as Rurik, Oleg, Igor, Olga, Svyatoslav, Vladimir, and Yaroslav. During this time, the Kievan Rus empire was established and rose steadily to become a major regional power, even challenging the dominant Byzantines.

We depend on our community and are a part of it. No matter how right your family is, without the community you cannot survive. In the past, there has been too much emphasis on one’s continent, region, and religion. Now that sort of thinking is considered outdated. What we really need is a sense of oneness among seven billion human beings. This could be one of the positive outcomes of the coronavirus crisis.” —His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Why Did She Jump? - My...

There is one day in Joan Childs' life that she wishes she could do over: the day her daughter, Pam, a brilliant psychotherapist, plunged from a 15-story building to her death. In this vivid memoir, Childs, a psychotherapist, explains how her daughter's life was taken by the most unforgiving of executioners: bipolar disorder. It was the delusions, not her daughter, who made the final decision to end her life.
Why Did She Jump? provides an intimate, uncompromising look into one mother's search for peace, understanding, and clarity amid the chaos surrounding her daughter's tragic death. It is a masterful recounting of the events leading up to her suicide and lifts the veil of shame and secrecy as it forges a path toward understanding mental illness.
Even though Pam and Joan were skilled therapists, Pam could not be saved. Joan recounts vivid memories of Pam's life, the highs and lows, the red flags; how her daughter healed unreachable patients while she unraveled; and how she fooled everyone into thinking she was stable.
With searing honesty and great insight, Childs offers a rallying cry of support for anyone going through a similar struggle.
