"Route 66 Locations" takes readers on an illuminating journey along America's most iconic highway, exploring the rich tapestry of historical landmarks, cultural attractions, and urban developments that define the "Mother Road." This comprehensive guide delves into the evolution of Route 66 from its inception to its decommissioning, examining its profound impact on American culture and geography.
The book follows the geographic path of Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles, offering a unique temporal perspective on each significant location. It combines historical analysis with current status reports and future outlooks, providing readers with a holistic view of the highway's place in American history. From the rise and fall of roadside businesses to the influence on migration patterns, "Route 66 Locations" paints a vivid picture of how this iconic route shaped 20th-century America and continues to captivate imaginations today.
What sets this book apart is its interdisciplinary approach, blending elements of urban planning, sociology, and economics to present a nuanced understanding of Route 66's cultural significance. By examining preservation efforts and addressing debates surrounding redevelopment, the book serves as both a practical guide for modern-day explorers and a call to action for those interested in protecting this vital piece of Americana.

By the mid-15th century, the Byzantine Empire had collapsed and the various Crusades that had taken place in the region had largely disrupted the overland routes of the Silk Road and trade. Compounding the difficulties of trade was the rise of the Ottoman Empire in place of the Byzantines and the outbreak of the Black Death in Europe.
It was roughly around this time that a period of European exploration began, and major factors that contributed to this period of exploration were introduced by the Chinese, albeit indirectly. The magnetic compass had already been developed and used by the Chinese sailors since the 12th century, although it had first been created in the 3rd century BCE as a divination device. The Portuguese started exploring the west coast of Africa and the Atlantic under orders from Prince Henry the Navigator. At this point, Europeans had not yet been capable of navigating completely around Africa since the ships being built were not yet fully capable of being able to sail very far from the coast and navigation in open waters was difficult, but the Portuguese continued pushing down the western African coast looking for ways to bypass the Ottomans and Muslims of Africa who had been making overland trade routes difficult.
In 1488, Bartholomew Diaz rounded the southern tip of Africa, named the Cape of Good Hope by King John of Portugal, and entered the Indian Ocean from the Atlantic. 	The Portuguese had found access to the trade regions that they had been searching for, but sailing from Portugal to India and beyond would require too many resources to travel with at once. To remedy this problem, Portugal began establishing a number of forts and trading posts along the route. The Portuguese were able to establish a fort on the west coast of India, Fort Manuel, in 1500, and in 1505 a fort was erected off the coast of Tanzania.

Why did Japanese soldiers fight with such ferocious determination in the Pacific War? Why did they choose death over surrender, even when defeat was inevitable?
Honorable Death explores the powerful cultural, military, and psychological forces that drove Japanese soldiers to embrace gyokusai—fighting to the last man. From the Bushido warrior code to the brutal realities of Imperial Japanese Army indoctrination, this book reveals how ordinary men were transformed into soldiers who viewed death in battle as the ultimate honor.
Drawing on firsthand accounts, military records, and cultural analysis, author Daniel Wrinn examines the infamous banzai charges, kamikaze attacks, and last stands that defined the Pacific Theater. Discover how shame, loyalty, and the warrior ethos created an enemy unlike any the Allies had faced before.
Perfect for World War II history enthusiasts and anyone seeking to understand the Japanese military mindset that shaped the Pacific War's brutal campaigns from Guadalcanal to Okinawa.
