Sinopse

Plains of America explores how the vast grasslands of the United States have profoundly shaped the nation's history, ecology, and cultural identity. It examines the intricate ecosystems that support diverse wildlife, the sustainable practices of indigenous peoples who thrived there for millennia, and the transformative impact of modern agriculture. The book reveals how these plains, once dominated by bison and managed sustainably by indigenous communities, have been altered through westward expansion and agricultural practices, leading to contemporary challenges like soil erosion and water scarcity.

The narrative progresses by first introducing the plains' geological history and diverse ecosystems. It then delves into the pre-Columbian era, highlighting the cultures and environmental knowledge of indigenous peoples. A significant portion addresses westward expansion and the rise of agriculture, analyzing their effects. Ultimately, the book discusses current issues and potential solutions for a sustainable future, drawing from archaeological records, historical documents, and ecological studies. It presents a microcosm of the relationship between humans and nature, emphasizing the need for adaptation and sustainability.

The striking saga of the Glorious Revolution is one that continues to fascinate historians around the world today. Some chroniclers have referred to these events as the “Bloodless Revolution,” but other historians say otherwise. The ruthless game of politics that William of Orange and England’s King James II played may have been somewhat bloodless in comparison to history's greatest rebellions, but the rebels, soldiers, and other pawns who lost their lives along the way must not be forgotten. The revolution would also pave the path for a series of bloody wars between England and Scotland, the result of which has left quite a legacy of its own.
Furthermore, it’s important to remember that James did try to return to England, and there would be two more years of war before James II gave up the quest to regain the throne. On July 1, 1690, the famous Battle of the Boyne was fought near the town of Drogheda, about five miles west of Baltray. The combatants were the supporters of King James II and King William III, both claiming to be the lawful sovereigns of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The conflict was part of a broader struggle for the destiny of the British Isles, and though it was not the decisive battle of the war, it is the most famous, the commemoration of which still fans tensions between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. In its aftermath, James II would again leave the British Isles, this time for good.

This is a collection of five alchemical tracts written by one of the most famous alchemists who was said to have discovered the Philosopher's Stone. In these writings Paracelsus attempts to educate the reader about the nature of the Philosopher's Stone and the scientific principles from which we can be assured of its existence and understand how it works. Like all alchemical tracts, the language is very cryptic and allegorical so as to be unintelligible to the unworthy.

How to be yourself at a party where you don’t know anyone?
    (Does the self exist?)
Why does Grandma put a cap and a plaid sweater on her Yorkie?
    (Do animals have a reason?)
How could I have stayed with such a stupid guy for so long?
(Do we only desire things that we consider good?)

When we hear “philosophy,” we sometimes think of incomprehensible or boring books. The very names of the authors are unpronounceable: Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger. Living or dead, they often look like zombies. They are in their own world and use words that we do not always understand, like “idiosyncrasy,” “ontological,” or “transcendental.” In this book, we hope to remove these prejudices. Philosophy is not boring; it allows us to understand complex things in a simple way, and therefore it is never far from everyday life. It speaks to everyone. It is for everyone.
