Sinopsis

Pigeon Facts reveals the surprising story of pigeons, creatures often overlooked despite their significant role in both science and history. Delving into their remarkable navigational abilities, the book highlights how pigeons utilize magnetoreception, potentially using the Earth's magnetic field to find their way home. The book emphasizes that pigeons are not just urban dwellers but complex organisms with innate capabilities and historical contributions worthy of attention.

The book explores pigeon biology, focusing on sensory systems and genetics, before examining the science of magnetoreception and various related theories. From their domestication to their use as messengers in wartime, and their contribution to early scientific experiments, the book emphasizes the pigeon's surprising impact on human affairs. The journey concludes by examining the pigeon's place in today's urban ecosystems.

Drawing from diverse sources, including scientific studies and historical records, the book presents an interdisciplinary view of pigeons. This approach is designed to be accessible to a broad audience interested in science, biology, and history, providing a deeper appreciation for these birds' complexity and contributions. It is important to remember that the book also acknowledges controversies, such as the impact of pigeons on agriculture.

Both Grant and Sherman shared the same theory of war: anything that might help the enemy's war effort should be considered a military target. After the Atlanta campaign, Grant explained to Sherman that the Confederates must be “demoralized and left without hope,” and he instructed Sherman, “Take all provisions, forage and stock wanted for the use of your command. Such as cannot be consumed, destroy. Leave the valley so barren that crows flying over it...will have to carry their provender with them.” This strategy sought the total economic collapse of the South, as well as completely disabling the South’s capability of fielding armies. In addition to the wholesale plundering of Southern resources, including taking them from civilians, the Union reversed its policy of swapping prisoners, realizing it had a far bigger reserve of manpower than the South. The Atlanta Campaign was a perfect example of this, as both sides lost about the same number of casualties. By September 1864, however, Sherman still had about 80,000 men, while Hood’s army was reduced to about 30,000.
Following the design of Grant's innovative and successful Vicksburg Campaign, Sherman's armies eliminated their need for traditional supply lines by living off the land. 	Ultimately, Sherman’s armies cut a path of abject destruction 60 miles wide and 300 hundred miles long from Atlanta to Savannah, which some likened to a Biblical blight. And as Sherman had intended, he did indeed made Georgia “howl.”
Due in large part to the March to the Sea, Sherman remains controversial across much of the United States today. The South considered him akin to a terrorist and adamantly insisted that he was violating the norms of warfare by targeting civilians. In many ways, Sherman is still the scourge of the South nearly 160 years after he vowed to make Georgia howl.

Francis Grierson's, The Valley of Shadows, is truly a lost American classic. Written at the dawn of the twentieth century, the author has remarkably captured his adventures and observations as a child growing up on the prairies of Illinois in the years leading up the Civil War, in a region that was neither North nor South; neither for slavery nor against it; and how their small family farm became an unscheduled stop on the Underground Railroad.Written in an authentic vernacular of the time, and populated by larger than life characters, Grierson has woven a tale of excitement and mystery, set in a second Garden of Eden of wildlife and nature. The prose and dialogue is like Shakespeare of the prairie. It reads like a cross between Tom Sawyer and Uncle Tom's Cabin, and stands out among all of the other books written about that era. What people are saying:“It has a quality not to be found in any other writing about the Civil War;""Its prose is alive, strong, subtle, of warm color, almost overpowering;""No one can read it, without finding new enlightenment about our past.”

The war stories and combat narratives of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment during five-and-a-half years of combat in Vietnam.

When the US Army went to war in South Vietnam in 1965, the general consensus was that counterinsurgency was an infantryman's war; if there were any role at all for armored forces, it would be strictly to support the infantry. However, from the time the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment arrived in country in September 1966, troopers of the Blackhorse Regiment demonstrated the fallacy of this assumption. By the time of Tet '68, the Army's leadership began to understand that the Regiment's mobility, firepower, flexibility, and leadership made a difference on the battlefield well beyond its numbers.

Over the course of the 11th Cavalry's five-and-a-half years in combat in South Vietnam and Cambodia, over 25,000 young men served in the Regiment. Their stories—and those of their families—represent the Vietnam generation in graphic, sometimes humorous, often heart-wrenching detail. Collected by the author through hundreds of in-person, telephone, and electronic interviews over a period of twenty-five-plus years, these "war stories" provide context for the companion volume, The Blackhorse in Vietnam.
