Beschreibung

Hull Construction explores the fascinating evolution of shipbuilding, detailing how material science and engineering innovations have shaped the vessels that traverse our oceans. From the early days of timber construction to the modern era of steel and composite materials, the book highlights the critical role of hull design in ensuring maritime safety and operational efficiency. A key insight is how the shift from riveting to welding revolutionized ship fabrication, significantly impacting both the size and structural integrity of ships. This book uniquely blends mechanical engineering principles with maritime history, offering a comparative analysis of construction methods across different eras.

Hull Construction begins with the fundamentals of hull design and early timber-based methods, progressing through the age of iron and steel, and culminating in modern techniques like advanced composites and modular construction. By examining historical records, engineering reports, and case studies, the book presents a comprehensive overview of how past decisions continue to influence modern shipbuilding practices, particularly regarding structural integrity and the adoption of industry standards.

The book emphasizes the dynamic interplay between technological advancements, economic factors, and regulatory landscapes in shaping hull construction. It demonstrates that the ongoing quest for improved performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness drives innovation in the maritime industry. The narrative unfolds across chapters, building from basic principles to complex applications, providing valuable insights for naval architects, marine engineers, maritime historians, and students alike.

From the acclaimed author of Tubes, a lively and surprising tour of the infrastructure behind the weather forecast, the people who built it, and what it reveals about our climate and our planet
The weather is the foundation of our daily lives. It’s a staple of small talk, the app on our smartphones, and often the first thing we check each morning. Yet behind these quotidian interactions is one of the most expansive machines human beings have ever constructed—a triumph of science, technology and global cooperation. But what is this ‘weather machine’ and who created it?
In The Weather Machine, Andrew Blum takes readers on a fascinating journey through an everyday miracle. In a quest to understand how the forecast works, he visits old weather stations and watches new satellites blast off. He follows the dogged efforts of scientists to create a supercomputer model of the atmosphere and traces the surprising history of the algorithms that power their work. He discovers that we have quietly entered a golden age of meteorology—our tools allow us to predict weather more accurately than ever, and yet we haven’t learned to trust them, nor can we guarantee the fragile international alliances that allow our modern weather machine to exist.
Written with the sharp wit and infectious curiosity Andrew Blum is known for, The Weather Machine pulls back the curtain on a universal part of our everyday lives, illuminating our relationships with technology, the planet, and the global community.

By the time the Hubble telescope reached orbit, it was already the world’s most famous telescope, but it was also the most scorned. The telescope cost nearly $2 billion more to complete than anticipated, and to make matters worse, the first images it sent back were skewed. However, within about a year of fixing it, the telescope captured images of a major event in the solar system. In July 1994, the telescope provided a firsthand observation of a comet, Shoemaker-Levy 9, breaking apart and slamming into Jupiter. The comet broke into about two dozen pieces, some of them more than a mile wide, and hit the giant planet with the force of millions of atomic bombs. In addition to capturing the streaking comet breaking up and colliding with Jupiter, the telescope captured images of the impact marks that were left on Jupiter’s surface, helping astronomers study Jupiter’s atmosphere and debris left by major impacts.
The increase in excitement was palpable. Scientists had viewed much of the universe through Hubble, almost as it was when it was formed, but they learned that none of these galaxies were the first ones formed. Then ultimately realized that “Hubble wasn’t the right instrument to detect those first galaxies.” “The farther we can see in space, the farther we can see in time…and that’s not a metaphor. That’s actually literally true,” explained scientist Amber Straughn. The Webb Space Telescope represents “looking in a part of space that we’ve never seen before.” The telescope will be able to detect the earliest galaxies because of its unparalleled sensitivity. Another factor is the kind of light it will collect, “light that our eyes aren’t designed to see.”

Around 13.5 billion years ago, energy, time, matter and space had come to be known as the phenomenon of the Big Bang. The theory of the fundamental features of the universe is referred to as physics. Around 30,000 years when these features had appeared, energy along with matter had started the coalescing into various complex structures referred to as the atoms. These then combined themselves into bigger molecules. The theory of atoms along with molecules as well as its interaction is referred to as the chemistry. Some 3.8 billion years before, on some planet known as the Earth, several molecules had combined to result in some large and well-defined structures known as the organisms. The theory of the organisms is referred to as biology.
Around 70,000 years before, the organisms which belonged to the group homo sapiens had started forming even larger and elaborative structures known as the cultures. The development of these cultures is known as history.
