Sinopsis

Halloween Origins explores the captivating journey of Halloween, revealing its transformation from ancient Celtic roots to a global phenomenon. The book traces the evolution of Samhain, a pagan festival marked by rituals and beliefs, into the modern celebration of All Hallows' Eve. It highlights how customs like wearing costumes originated not just from playful intent, but also from the need to ward off wandering spirits.

The book examines the Christianization of pagan practices and the transatlantic journey of Halloween traditions to North America, where they underwent further adaptation. Halloween Origins also offers a fresh perspective on the commercialization of Halloween, exploring debates surrounding cultural appropriation and authenticity. It utilizes diverse sources, including folklore archives and contemporary ethnographic studies, to present a nuanced understanding of this continually evolving holiday.

Structured chronologically, the book begins with pre-Christian Celtic traditions and progresses through the Christianization period, transatlantic adaptations, and modern commercial influences. This approach provides a comprehensive overview, making it valuable for anyone interested in the cultural and historical significance of Halloween.

The Islamic Golden Age, a period marked by extraordinary cultural, economic, and scientific prosperity, spanned roughly from the 8th to the 14th century. This era is often considered to have begun during the reign of the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid (786–809), particularly with the establishment of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. At this time, Baghdad was the world's largest city, serving as the epicenter of intellectual activity. The House of Wisdom became a hub for scholars and polymaths from a diverse range of backgrounds who were tasked with gathering, translating, and preserving the classical knowledge of the ancient world. Key works from Greek, Syriac, Middle Persian, and Sanskrit texts were translated into Arabic and Syriac, with some later making their way into Latin and Hebrew. This immense intellectual undertaking played a significant role in preserving and expanding upon the knowledge that would later form the foundation of the Renaissance in Europe.
The decline of the Abbasid caliphate, culminating in the Mongol invasions and the Siege of Baghdad in 1258, is commonly regarded as marking the end of this flourishing period. However, the exact timeline of the Golden Age’s conclusion is debated among scholars. Some place the end around 1350, coinciding with the Timurid Renaissance, while others extend it until the 15th or even the 16th century, linking it with the rise of the Islamic Gunpowder Empires.
One of the driving forces behind the Islamic Golden Age was the emphasis placed on learning within Islamic teachings. The Quran and Hadiths, which contain numerous references to the pursuit of knowledge, were fundamental in motivating Muslims during this period to engage in scientific, philosophical, and literary endeavors.

“We must think globally, but act locally.” —His Holiness the Dalai LamaSimple and accessible wisdom from His Holiness the Dalai Lama on how we are human, how we are not alone, and how we must help each other.   A global pandemic has revealed to us how the world can be shaken up within a very short period. Such a crisis—experienced by all humans on the earth—has given rise to uncertainty, fear, anxiety, loneliness, and depression. As societies and nations struggle to come to terms with and contain it, economic breakdown, migration, environmental crises, and a dwindling spirit stare us in the face. In this climate, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is calling upon us to be brave—to have the courage to step up to the recognition that we are all part of the same global community. His Holiness reminds us that it takes courage to give up our self-centered sense of individuality; it takes courage to find a sense of oneness with seven billion human beings. Bravery is admitting that we are not alone, and that without community we cannot survive. In Be Brave, His Holiness the Dalai Lama teaches us that practicing compassion and cultivating peace of mind are the paths to inner strength, peace, clarity, and happiness.
