Beschreibung

"Gods and Goddesses" explores the captivating world of deities across diverse religions and cultures, examining their myths, influence on faith, and lasting impact on society. The book delves into how beliefs molded societies, inspired art, and resonate today. It investigates the origins, evolution, and narratives of divine figures, alongside associated rituals and evolving perceptions shaped by political, social, and economic factors. Deities embody fundamental human values and aspirations, offering insights into core beliefs driving civilizations for millennia. The book traces historical and social contexts of belief systems, from polytheistic to monotheistic faiths, using anthropology, archaeology, and comparative mythology. For example, exploring Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse, and Hindu pantheons, the book examines key deities, attributes, relationships, and myths, highlighting thematic commonalities and variations. The book progresses from introducing the concept of deities to exploring major pantheons and culminates by examining their legacy in contemporary society, including their presence in art, literature, popular culture, and modern spiritual practices.

The Holy Spirit in the Christian Life offers a brief account of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, focusing specifically on the question of the person and work of the Spirit in the Christian life.

Lutheran theologian Cheryl Peterson identifies three key movements of the Christian life, showing the Spirit's role in each: justification (God the Holy Spirit working for us), sanctification (God the Holy Spirit working in us), and mission (God the Holy Spirit working through us). Peterson explores scriptural and doctrinal perspectives on the person and work of the Holy Spirit--especially from churches with Reformation roots--in view of contemporary spiritual movements, including the spiritual-but-not-religious and the Pentecostal and charismatic movements. In addition, she explores the means of the Spirit's work through Word, sacrament, and spiritual gifts.

This book offers a fresh look at the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the church today. It is ideal for seminarians and working pastors.

Not Enough Good Men - Gender...

There is a crisis facing America’s men. They have fallen behind women in school, they are often overlooked in career opportunities, and they are scolded for their unique educational needs. No solutions have been found because our reigning civil rights regime prevents us from even acknowledging the problem or from coming to grips with it. Instead, our laws keep insisting on “gender neutral” remedies like improving test scores or graduation rates—ignoring the natural differences between the sexes. The assault on single-sex institutions—from military schools to the boy scouts—accelerated with the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Virginia (1996). In Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg majority opinion, she argued that natural differences between men and women were artifacts of prejudice and could not be used to justify single-sex education. She predicted that Virginia Military Institute (VMI) would not have to change much to admit women. Over twenty years later, evidence to the contrary is compounding. With new physical standards, alternative forms of discipline, new dress codes and grooming standards, and a new honor code which disregards the courage and sacrifice of men, one could only image what else could be changed. To seriously consider the unique educational needs for men, we must be free to consider the unique natural differences between men and women. Therefore, the states should seek to overturn United States v. Virginia (1996) and be allowed to consider the unique needs of men once again in education and allow manly honor as a legitimate goal for public schools.

10 Things You Don't Have to Do to Be Close to God

Like a succession of failed diet regimens, the much-touted techniques that are supposed to bring us closer to God "in our hearts" can instead make us feel anxious, frustrated, and overwhelmed.

Phillip Cary explains that discipleship is a gradual, long-term process that comes through the gospel experienced in Christian community, not a to-do list designed to help us live the Christian life "right." He covers ten things we don't have to do to be close to God, skillfully unpacking the riches of traditional Christian spirituality. The expanded edition includes a new afterword.
