Synopsis

Diplomatic Meeting Impact examines the significant yet often underestimated role of high-level security conferences in shaping international relations. The book explores how these meetings foster international cooperation, influence crisis management, and contribute to global security policies. For example, the establishment of cybersecurity norms and arms control agreements are often direct results of dialogues initiated at these conferences. By analyzing diplomatic discourse and policy formulation, the book illuminates the mechanisms driving international security governance and the evolution of security conferences from the post-World War II era to the present.

The book approaches the subject with a neutral, analytical tone, presenting information in an accessible manner suitable for policymakers, academics, and students alike. It progresses logically, beginning with a theoretical framework and key concepts before delving into case studies of specific security conferences. Major chapters explore the influence of these conferences on counter-terrorism strategies, cybersecurity norms, and arms control, offering a comprehensive understanding of how the world seeks to manage conflict and promote peace through diplomacy.

    What's Wrong with Stereotyping?

What's Wrong with Stereotyping? offers a refreshing and accessibly written philosophical take on the ethics of stereotyping. Stereotyping is woven into every aspect of human experience: conversation, psychology, algorithmic systems, and culture. It relates to generalization and induction, core aspects of rationality. But when and why it is morally wrong to stereotype? This book tackles this deep and enduring puzzle.

Core chapters evaluate important ethical wrongs: the failure to treat persons as individuals, disrespect, harm, prejudice, threats to freedoms, and the failure to treat persons as equals. One finds that there is no "essence" of wrongful stereotyping, a single property or set of properties that all problematic cases share in common. Nor are the wrongs of stereotyping reducible to an elegant number, two or three. Instead, wrongful stereotyping is characterized by clusters of wrong-making properties, including all the ones noted here. Listeners will come away with a radically pluralistic, open-ended theory of wrongful stereotyping that they can use to identify wrongful stereotyping in their own lives and our contemporary world. Filled with thought-provoking examples and models for social change, this book emphasizes the messiness of moral reality and the importance of looking to the past in order to understand the ethical perils of stereotyping.

  • Fall of Rome The: The History and Legacy of the Western Roman Empire’s Collapse in the 5th Century - cover

Fall of Rome The: The History...

For the people of the ancient Mediterranean and beyond, the city of Rome had been a symbol of power for centuries, and entering the early 5th century CE, the Eternal City hadn’t been taken by an enemy force since the Gauls had done it about 800 years, an unheard of period of tranquility in a world wracked with almost constant warfare.
Thus, when the Visigoths, whom the Romans considered uncultured and inferior, took the city of Rome and sacked it in 410, the world was stunned. It made theologians of the newly Christianized empire question God’s plan on Earth, and it encouraged many leading Romans to look east to Constantinople for their future. Indeed, the Western Roman Empire would completely collapse in the late 5th century, less than 70 years after the Visigoths sacked Rome, and just how it went from being a superpower to a poorly led, weak, and vulnerable shadow of its former self has preoccupied historians for centuries.
To this day, it remains difficult to trace just when the decline began, but it’s fair to say that the sack of Rome was the result of a number of factors that had been coalescing for many years. Only Roman arrogance kept the empire from seeing the grave peril its capital was in, which helped bring about the events leading up to the fall of Rome itself. The Latin phrase imperium sine fine (“empire without end”) neatly summed up not just the geographic reach of the mighty empire, but the feeling that it would never end. Nonetheless, little more than 300 years after the end of the Pax Romana, the Western Roman Empire had all but ceased to exist. During the same period, the population of the city of Rome itself declined from over a million people to less than 30,000. Within the walls of Rome, vast areas returned to pastureland and shepherds grazed their flocks in a surreal landscape among the ruins of structures representing the might of the empire.
